I was joking and being a bit silly at the same time ,I thought that was obvious. If not, my apologies. Cuevas would have destroyed him in a full on sparring session. I can't imagine too many Mexican fighters going easy on anyone in sparring

    Regarding the San Antonio News,,,,,,,,,,,,

Not one photo, or an article that was printed the day of the Pipino appearance.

No information about whether, the two were even wearing head gear, 16 oz.
    sparring gloves, any protective gear.

Of course, you throw your 14 1/2 year old son in the ring with a jaw-breaking
professional, and a World Champion no less.

Did you know, Youth Boxers use 10 oz. to 12 oz. gloves, not 8 oz. rock-mitts.

By the way, Jose Palacios, who was Pipino's good friend, sparred with Pipino 99% of the time
and appeared on '10' boxing venues with Pipino Cuevas.............That Is A Fact.

    Laxpdx,,,,,,,,

That Phil Berger article, is nothing more than his interview from Tony Ayala Sr.
    Phil Berger was not there.....

And don't you think,,,,,,,,,that the Senior would make up just a little bit of this
'fable', to draw some publicity for his son.

C'mon,,,,,,,,,you're not that naive are you....

On Antonio Gin, I don't think he was anything special,,,,,,,,other than he worked out at
the San Fernando Gym in 1977.

I have the Boxeo Results and Records thru 1978,,that is how I got the information on
    Antonio Gin.

    Won his first 7-bouts, 7-0-0
In his first scheduled 10-Rounder, a Lightweight bout, was KO'd in 4, by Claude Durden in Los Angeles (August 23, 1975)
Last bout, August 19, 1978, in a Welterweight bout, won by KO 6 over Tony Sanchez in Baja California.

I especially love the part about how Cuevas was roaming the country looking for "decent sparring" less than a week before his fight against Clyde Gray in L.A. Has anyone ever heard of a fighter doing a traveling road show act a WEEK before a title defense because he "couldn't find good sparring"? And not being able to find sparring in L.A, no less?

Only this diehard Ayala Jr. mark would believe a fable like that.

    D9,,,,,,,,

    Good Stuff!!

Jose Palacios (Pipino's #1 sparring partner) was on the Cuevas-Gray undercard.

Everyone knows, when Pipino would do 'Open-to-the-Public' Gym workouts, Jose Palacios was there.

How many routine sparring sessions from the 1970s have you seen?

Why would you assume that a film crew would be there?

Why would Ayala have a film crew there when his son could have just as easily been decimated by Cuevas.

Im not saying it did or didnt happen, I just think your argument against it is flimsy.

    Lord Tywin,,,,,,

Not sure a San Antonio film crew would bother going to the San Fernando Gym, as the Ayala's
were not the most popular Family in San Antonio,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if you catch my drift.

At least a photo (just one) of even Pipino Cuevas at the gym would be
suffice. Nothing, Nada has ever been produced.

Didn't it ever strike you, that in all those supposed accurate articles,
not one mention of the San Fernando Gym was ever printed.

Or even the location, West Travis Street.

And a crowd of 2000 showed up. Maybe San Antonio was out of
    Kodak film that day.

If you read any of the articles, Cuevas was known for being tough on sparring partners. I imagine they were running out of volunteers. And where does it say it was a week before the Gray bout?

Accounts vary on the supposed date of this sparring session. Ayala Sr says "summer of 1977" and others say "August" or "August 13th" in this thread.

No way Cuevas was in San Antonio anywhere near fight time of August 6th, 1977, either before or after. Professional fighters, nonetheless champions, didn't roam the countryside scavenging for sparring partners weeks before a title fight. Champions PAID sparring partners and quite well. And no way Cuevas was slogging around a week after a title fight in some random city to which he had no connection looking for a fight Clyde Gray wasn't able to provide. The Common Sense Test says no to both.

Look, the vortex we're getting into here is that certain knuckleheads on this board want to devalue Ayala Jr as some phantom hype job instead of a sure fire champion like anyone who saw him fight and has a functioning batch of gray matter would deduce and I know you rightfully want to defend against this stupidity. But the facts don't add up to this as anything more that a likely invention of Ayala Sr to promote his son.

Phil Berger was not there...and neither were you.

And don't you think...you dispute these articles with eyewitness accounts because they disprove the so-called "facts" you have been fabricating?

You don't think I'm that naive do you? Wait, I guess you do.

Boxeo Records and Results, I tried to google it twice, there is no website.

Tony Sanchez, WW, 1978...only one fighter on BoxRec fit that bill...he had one bout...the date was not August 19...the opponent was not Antonio Gin...

What reliable source said Antonio Gin worked out at San Fernando Gym in 1977...and sparred with Tony Jr? If he sparred with Tony, OK...but the proof it was him and not Cuevas?

This is exactly why sparring matches do not matter. It wasn't even significant enough to put on film. No matter how many stories come out that Tony sparred Cueves or Hearns or Duran he never fought them, yet those guys fought each other. We know that because we have film of them fighting. Tony will never go down as one percent of the fighters those guys were!!!!!! And that isn't even an exaggeration!

    D9,,,,,,,,,

    Well stated.

    A Scenario,,,,for LAXPDX,,,

Lets say if you had a young son,,,,,,,a young amateur star on the rise,,,,,,

And a famous World Champion was coming to town, and to a Gym that you were
    the Boxing Coordinator for,,,,,,,

And you were going to let your son, spar with the Great Champion,,,,,,,,

You would think, that you would have taken more than a few photo's of his
appearance, at 'YOUR GYM', and with 'YOUR SON',,,,,,,,

    Enough Said,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,IT NEVER HAPPENED,,,,,,,,

Of course, you will say that there were no Camera's available in downtown San Antonio.

    GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!

Bigger issue is why Cuevas would move his training camp to a city he has no connection with, that was not known for having high profile fighters or gyms, to train for a fight in L.A, where he usually fought out of and that was a hotbed for boxing chock full of sparring partners, and (the best part) supposedly "couldn't afford" (as a highly paid champion fighting in front of sellout crowds) to bring a sparring partner to a city he had no reason to be in anyways.

Mind boggling. But, hey, LAX needs to believe in this story the same way those silly women see Mother Mary in their cream cheese and cinnamon bagels we read about. Can't argue with those who neeed to desperately believe.
