Has anyone anywhere ever asked Pipino Cuevas about this? The man is still alive and, last I heard, fit and healthy. I would discount anything any of the Ayala's said. It would be interesting to hear Cuevas comment on these stories.

    janwalshs,

Pipino was asked about this a few years ago on Boxeo Telemundo.

Showing class, the Former Champion just dismissed it casually, by saying

Engish translation; "Yes,,,I've heard that story too.'

A Classy response, from a Classy Champion.

I think Pipino told Clyde Gray to wait before starting without him.

Pipino had to go to San Antonio, to spar with some 14 year-old Amateur.

You want him to prove a negative... That is interesting train of thought but not how it works. The burden of proof is ON the people who said this fight took place, not the other way around

No, YOU said there were possibly no cameras available day.

Antonio Gin, Boxeo, now that Cuevas "quote".

You go from one supposed source to another. Which suggests you're making these things up as you go along.

I cannot imagine Tony beating up on Pipino. Once it got tough and if Pipino wanted to he would land a left hook like someone said and stop the momentum. Ayala cannot compare to a legend like Pipino. Didn't Cueves have 10 title defenses of his welterweight title? It took a boxing legend like Thomas Hearns to end his reign!!!

if it cannot be proved then it did not happen. I do not see the hype. It was sparring. Had he been matched with Hearns Duran or Benitez he would have lost easy!!!!those guys were the cream of the crop and he was not in their class and never would have been!!!!

    Lets not forget,

That in 1977,,,,,,,,,Tony Ayala Jr. was only boxing (in sanctioned Junior Tournaments)
against other 'Junior' 14 and 15 year-old boxers.

And this with headgear and 10 oz. gloves, sometimes even 12 oz. gloves.

And primarily amateur boxers from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska and New Mexico,,,
,,,in other words Southwest Region, 14 and 15 year-old Juniors.

In 1977, he wasn't even old enough to compete in the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves Tournament.

    That Is a Fact........

Are we done proving a negative now? Can the people who actually CLAIM it did happen proved substantial proof that it did finally? Instead of asking us to prove it didnt.

    KuRupt,

I think we pretty much extinguished the 'fable' of Tony Ayala Jr. beating up Pipino Cuevas.

As for Pipino, he was in Los Angeles, California........for all of July and the
first week of August in 1977.

He set up his training, at the Main Street Gym, where there would routinely be
several hundred fans watching his 'public work-outs', while preppping for his
Saturday, August 6, 1977 bout with Clyde Gray.

Some have said, that his gym work-outs drew more Los Angeles Mexican-American
boxing fans than the Thursday Night Fights at the Olympic in July.

The Saturday, July 30, 1977 outdoor work-out session drew 6000 fans.

As a matter of fact, he was a regular at the Olympic on Thursday Nights, watching
    the following weekly boxing events.

August 4, 1977.......Andy Ganigan from Hawaii was in town.
July 28, 1977.........Albert Sandoval vs. Alberto Morales
July 21, 1977.........Frankie Baltazar vs. Delfino Rodriguez

    C'mon,,,,,,,,,

Little Pudgy Tony Jr. was in Lincoln, Nebraska in late-June 1977 (June 19 thru June 22).

Maybe Pipino Cuevas went to the San Fernando Gym, and set up a 'pup tent' while he
waited for Lil' Tony and Senior to return from the National Junior Olympics.

Masashi Kudo, did not have the talent of Tony Ayala Jr.,,,,

but he had one thing that Tony Ayala Jr.,,,,, never had.....and never will.

And if you look at Tony Ayala Jr. 'professional ring accomplishments' before his personal issues in 1983,,
just what great fighter did he defeat, or better yet, what very good fighter.

    Nada, No One, Nobody..............

i don't think we can conclude something is true simply because someone hasn't told you it's a lie yet. otherwise i have the world's biggest dick :D (that is...until my ex-wife sends you pictures proving that it's not)
