If Calzaghe has one last fight left there isn't any one fighter he absolutely must beat to necessarily prove something, simply because nobody has clearly dominated the divisions he's been fighting in. Sure he could take Hopkins again, or Dawson, Kessler, Johnson, and I would give him credit for taking any of these fights, but he really doesn't have to. It wouldn't be the same as Mayweather Jr. taking Cotto or Margarito, which are the obvious fights to be made in the division (assuming he comes out of retirement). If he beats Dawson, Dawson will be called on inexperience. Kessler: he'll get stick for being european. Johnson and Hopkins: old-timers. So who does he fight?
Dawson is his best option -- but honestly he's pretty much done, and I wouldn't do it if I were him. I think he's going to pick an easier fight and fill up Cardiff Stadium for a last pay-day, and I don't mind it one bit. He's been making the fun fights for a while now, and that last one against Froch would be entertaining as well. I know for sure he's never going to touch Kessler again -- he did as well as he ever could in the first match, no need to revisit. If he picks Dawson, my respect will soar for him, as he doesn't have to.
he has already beat all he needs to, but what extra special have cotto or margarito done more than dawson that makes them so extra special as a defining fight, everyone knows mayweather should fight both of them just as everyone knows calzaghe should fight dawson, these fights will increase both fighters legacies but will far from define them.
Dawson doesn't help anything at this point. It might later on, just like Kessler might look better on the resume in the years to come, but today Dawson wouldn't necessarily add a lot to his resume, in ten years it might. Someone actually had a thread about this, it was a pretty decent thread.
i have never known a fighter to be aknowledged as acomplishing anything or being given any respet while they still fight, in 10 years Calzaghe's legacy will be sealed, he beat 6 or 7 former world champions etc etc.
I'm changing the title of the thread (I'm not sure if I can). What I mean is, there aren't any necessary fights left.
I like JC and I respect him but don't say he has no fights but mayweather somehow HAS to fight A or Cotto...u KNOW dawson is next..he is not inexperienced as he has now fought 3 former champs...he should fight dawson...his resume is not near floyds...if he wants to retire that is his choice...i will still think the samr of him but don't act like PBF should fight cotto or AM because he has fought much better comp than JC his whole career
so he can ride off in the sunset after beating ROY JONES but floyd needs AM for his legacy? dawson is twice the fighter AM is
EXACTLY...I would give JC more credit for beating a young strong prie dawson than I would floyd for beating either a HUGE brawler in AM or a tough decent fighter in Cotto
u have to be kidding....he is right in the heart of his prime and like u even said he will only get better in years to come...this is a fight that needs to happen...true fans will give mad respect to JC if he beats dawson
Dawson is definitely the better boxer compared to Margarito, just like Mayweather is definitely a better 'boxer' than Margarito. Margarito has intangibles that can't be taught that make him very difficult to beat. He can take a punch inhumanly and keeping bringing pressure. Something Dawsom definitely can't do, both are definitely worthy challengers, but entirely different fighters. Two of which can't be compared. Just for the record I think Margarito would lose to Mayweather and so would Dawson lose to Calzaghe. Still I would like to see both those fights in 2009.
No but PBF ranks higher as an ATG than Calzaghe, even if they both retire now, for good. Calzaghe could fight Dawson, and beat him, but would that really make get him a much better rating? PBF can stay retired, but IF he comes out of retirement, Margarito is a must fight. Dawson, on the other hand, isn't a must fight. He's just a possible contender.
