No surprise here. This fight should be on HBO not HBO PPV. Ward has no fanbase, can't sell tickets, and has for the most part a very boring fighting style. Kovalev is only known to hardcore fans but often is in exciting fights. This PPV is going to bomb. Fat Dan said last week that Roc Nation has lost money on every single Ward promotion so far and this will be no exception.

Perhaps in terms of fanbase yeah but in terms of magnitude of fight its possibly the most PPV worthy fight of recent years (discounting Manny and Pac ofcourse)

 

nothing against Sergei at all, I actually hope he wins cos i think his style and image resonates with the casual more than Ward....I think Ward has the skillset to win tho

 

Sergey Kruster Kovalev is the outsider according to the bookies. They will lose a lot of bread if he butters Ward...

The promoters seem resigned to mail this one in as it relates to the PPV and settle for a great live gate.

Considering they're at the tail end of a three week run that has a Pac fight and a record breaking UFC fight, I can see the logic of trimming as much overhead in the lead up as possible and taking the hardcore fans they can get. They're already asking 2 mil plus combat fans to spring for a 2nd PPV in a month. I don't think either is a wonderful promoter, but I get the logic here

This is why Ward demanded a 5 MIL $ guarantee or there would be no fight.
He really needs to go, boxing is better off without him.
