EDIT: I meant spar ! Sorry, english isn't my first language They say it's boring & not fun, even when my coach ask them to they find an excuse. I use a defensive style & I have decent power ( I can stun them, never boxed without headgear so I don't know how it would go like that ). Should I change gym ? :/ My coach isn,t really helpful anyways, he keep telling me to be more aggressive blablabla but I like winning comfortably on point ? I know I'm not a fighter but shouldn't he encourage me in keeping a style that makes me win...
How should I go about finding a new gym, Find a random new one and do the try-out / register for a month to see how it is ?
Are you sure that your style is the reason? For how long are you boxing? Did the guys explicitly told you that they dont want to box you because of your style/power.. Defenstive style as in you throw less punches and wait to counter? Usually in amatures people throw a lot of punches. Atleast in my gym.. So how sure are you in what you are saying?
Your gymmates sound like a bunch of b**ches, honestly.. You need sparring. If they are giving excuses, it means they really don't want to be fighters and you need to be around people that do. :ko
Nobody wants to spar a guy who fights like a b!tch though...Maybe incorporate some offense and show em who's boss.
Sounds like that gym is more about fitness than competition. Coaches are the ones that match up the sparring. You shouldnt have to ask any fighter directly yourself unless the coach that's been working with you is away from the gym. Your situation sounds like a mess and as others have touched on you should either change coach or gym.
Not enough information here to give an answer, but how about trying what your coach suggests? Maybe he thinks you need to have more offense to progress and have a chance to win at higher levels.
I don't trow a lot of punches, I was told I have a lot of power, I used to do Karate & silat and I was always told I had really good power for someone with my build. I fight at 140, and I'm 5'10, so I usually have to spar shorter boxer than me, I like to do 1-2s & keep my distance, hooks & uppercut once in a while, but I'm not confident enough that I won't be countered so I usually stick with quick 1-2s that are really hard to counter while moving to the sides / changing from orthodox to southpaw. I'm having a lot of fun sparring, I don't get why they don't ... I tho about it, but I've yet to lose an amateur boxing match. I used to do Karate also and using a similar style I barely lost in any competitions while attaining black belt at the age of 15... I don't see why I should try harder to get a knockout if I can just win comfortably on points. I play to win. If they were good they would cut off the ring better & not go into a shell when I punch them ...
Do you spar to win as well? Maybe that's your problem. Why are people insulting the gym and or the coaches? Maybe the guy runs around the ring and throws 2-3 punches per round. What would you get out of sparring someone like that? I wouldn't want to waste my time either.
I said I play to win ... sparring is playing. I spare to win, I always do more than what my opponent does, if he trew 30 punches, I'll be at 40, I just don't bother exposing myself to counters & punches most of the time. Use range & stand far popping with jabs.
Well obviously you've made up your mind to do it your way regardless. You say no one wants to spar with you ... so that's eventually going to have a negative impact on your progress if you don't get sparring. You say your coach isn't helpful ... but your reject his input and say you don't want to do things he suggests -- actually, you say you don't even want to try it his way, apparently, even in the gym. Every bit of input that doesn't confirm your viewpoint that you want to keep doing it your way is rejected. Sounds to me like you aren't very coachable. So just do it your way and stop asking for input that you don't really want. Good luck.
I've had experience sparring with Kyokushin karate guys (I'm a recreational student) and during class time they're very tentative and make sure they dont hit you too hard during drill work, but when it's time to spar they bring it. A lot of fun if you're matched up right. I would suggest for you to find a gym with some pros or serious students of boxing in it, and maybe even tape your sparring sessions and post them on here!! They sound fun. :happy:smoke
