As it turns out, Fedor needed the UFC more than the UFC needed Fedor.

Mods don't give a **** about this forum. It started as (and still is) a place for MMA troll threads from the General section to be sent to die.

I think its possible. He won't have the UFC machine pumping him as a MMA legend and the mainstream media lost interest in him when he lost the unbeaten streak streak. Just look at the lack of exposure the achievements of something like Frank Shamrock have, and Shamrock is a bigger star now than Fedor will be two years after retirement. Its sad, and the true fans will know who he is, but it may well happen.

He will be remembered by the hardcore. But his legacy is severely tarnished by his own actions and choices. He is not the automatic #1 ATG from here on out, and there are legitimate failings that badly hurt his overall standing.

Chief among this is that as the sport was growing in popularity and the skillsets and training methods were evolving, Fedor stagnated or went backwards. His losses to Werdum and Henderson in particular weren't because he was physically past it. They came because he had devolved to a reckless, sloppy brawler.

He should have come to the UFC. But aside from that, he should have at least recognized that the sport was changing around him, and worked harder to keep up. Instead he stayed within his comfort zone, and probably bought into his own hype to an extent, and consequently he was left behind. He belongs to the dark ages of MMA, the time when it was struggling to gain a foothold as a legitimate sport in the West.

He could have been a bridge between the two eras, a champion in both Pride AND the Zuffa-era UFC, but sadly he wasn't. His legacy will suffer for that, because his downfall was mostly his own doing. :-(
