No sane person can dismiss my claim that Sven Ottke is the best boxer of all time..

Alright time to get some facts straight.

First of all Ottke's last 22 opponents had a record of 642-62-10...not 642-26-10.

    De La Hoya - Last 22 opponents...960-40-13

    Hopkins - Last 22 opponents...703-53-9

Trinidad - Last 22 opponents...709-62-13 (without Pendelton on the list the record would have 42 losses instead of 62.)

    Roy Jones - Last 22 opponents...622-41-11

These are the first 4 great fighters I looked at. Look up Calzaghe, Lewis, Mosley, Morales, Barrera, etc. and you would probably come up with the same type of numbers.

Keep in mind I'm not downing Ottke's accomplishments, I'm just letting you know he sure as **** isn't the GOAT! :good :hi:

    This isn't a joke, it's Serious Enough.

Not at all. It is an effort to gather responses for and against a minority opinion and examine them dispassionately. While it is true that scarcasm played some role in formulating the antithesis it was not the point of the exercise. Even before Socrates the use of Irony and Scarcasm was often needed to jolt people into exerting the effort to respond.
I can assure you that I do not personally consider Sven Ottke the GOAT. However, I still fail to see the specific differences between the two arguments.

And now the real debate can begin - you have established a distinction between "Best" vs "Greatest" that is not obvious from looking at the normal (or dictionary) meanings associated with these words.

    BEST
    n.
    One that surpasses all others.
The best part, moment, or value: The best is still to come. Let's get the best out of life.
The optimum condition or quality: look your best. She was at her best in the freestyle competition.
One's nicest or most formal clothing.
The supreme effort one can make: doing our best.
One's warmest wishes or regards: Give them my best.

    GREAT
    adj.

"I'm great," the Lion said -- "I reign
The monarch of the wood and plain!"

The Elephant replied: "I'm great --
No quadruped can match my weight!"

"I'm great -- no animal has half
So long a neck!" said the Giraffe.

"I'm great," the Kangaroo said -- "see
    My femoral muscularity!"

The 'Possum said: "I'm great -- behold,
My tail is lithe and bald and cold!"

    An Oyster fried was understood
To say: "I'm great because I'm good!"

    Each reckons greatness to consist
In that in which he heads the list...

To ensure that we are not engaging in a purely verbal dispute because we don't share the same terminology would you care to elaborate on this distinction in more detail?

I want to thank Lapdog69 for checking my facts and he is indeed correct... The SUM function on my spreadsheet skipped a cell and didn't get all of the losses in the column beyond that point. Correcting that error I now have the same numbers he does and that alters the argument slightly - I apologize for the error.

"The optimum condition or quality: look your best. She was at her best in the freestyle competition." applied with "One that surpasses all others.".

In boxing a purely H2H P4P best, which Robinson is not and Pep is nowhere near.

    Above post = oustanding.

CHJ's definition of "best", though, is "one that dominates tomato cans for 12 lopsided rounds, occaisonally stopping one via home-town ref".

How else would the GOAT have a resume whose highlights are an old Eubanks, Lacy, Manfredo, and Bika?

Calzaghe isn't the GOAT mate. Greatest of all Time.

    He is the BOAT.

I have said a million times Calzaghe's skill surpasses his greatness.

..And yet, time and time again, you have refused to divulge WHY.

How has Calzaghe proved that he is the best of all time? Domination of inferior opponents?
