One of the boys i train goes to school with another boy who trains at PCYC and is due to fight soon, he had arranged sparring with the bloke at school and tonight we drove down to PCYC for some sparring only to be told that PCYC doesnt allow sparring anymore? I asked how can boxers prepare for fights and i was advised that the trainers at PCYC are PCYC boxing trainers not fight trainers and if i wanted my boy to get some sparring to head down to a gym called fight gym which is a league gym. Not sure whats happen over the past couple of yrs but to stop sparring and still try teach boxing is a bit of a joke, its like being taught how to drive a car but you never get to test your skills out on the public road. Does anyone know whats going on with this new policy PCYC have put in place? Surely they must know that other gyms allow sparring and all the boys who dont spar will be at a huge dissadvantage.
pcyc's have plenty of fighters & plenty of sparring. what state were they in to be told that? they are all run independently
It was the club in Albury NSW, i used to be their trainer and sparring was allowed, actually its part of getting your qualifications, if your using the trainers licence for personal training then you are asked to leave the course. What i dont understand is PCYC boxing has their own tornments each year so how the hell do these boys in Albury stand a hope in hell if sparring is outlawed at the Albury Club? Ostini was the old boss but his gone, anyone know whos the new PCYC boxing boss and his contact info? I even asked to speak to the trainer and was told he was to busy to speak to me, i looked into the room and saw two trainers, one is the father the other is the son, the son was walking around with his hands in his pockets, i pointed this out to the manager and asked her "His too busy to talk to me but his standing around with his hands in his pockets" (Pointing at him) Its gone all to profit now, i was even asked to pay $20, i told the manager that my trainers licence will cover my boys and this has been the way we have always done it in the past, u cant charge guys who are coming to help your fighters prepare for fights by giving them some sparring, we decided to head over to Renos in Wodonga instead and got some decent sparring over there.
Quick question Ty, did you arrange the sparring beforehand or just turn up on the off chance of it happening?
The sparring was pre arranged but im not sure whats gone wrong. I told the guy i train that he should bring the fellow to our gym but he said the guy would prefer us to come to PCYC so he turns up tonight & says its on that the guy will be there tonight and he wants to spar. I wasnt able to speak to the trainers if thats what you could call them. so i couldnt get any other explination other than the one given from the manager that they no longer allow any sparring in the club. The sparring wasnt for me either Leon, it was for a guy ive been training for 5 yrs and is 15 yrs of age. I cant get any decent sparring for myself in Albury around my weight, i ended up doing a few rounds with Reno tonight and my boy sparred a couple of his younger guys who dont have any experiance, my boys not had a fight yet.
I know for a fact that the manager there is a long time member of ESB. He still reckons your Spidiot.
thats the first ive heard of this.dosent sound right.i know of a few pcyc in my area that still spar..ive sparred at 2 different pcyc myself this week. brisbane QLD.
Pcyc's have been a bit full on for a while, whenever I got a blood nose in sparring myself and my trainer had to fill out an incident report. this got pretty tiresome.. Cant see how they could ban sparring though, may as well ban boxing
Id like to try and sort it out, Albury doesnt have many gyms and its good to have a couple you can visit from time to time for sparring. Helps everyone improve imo. I visited PCYC boxing website and noticed they have this written in the Boxing for Fitness classes section. I guess this is only for Sydney Gyms? Isnt there a head body for PCYC Boxing that sets all these rules? None of the boys in Albury could compete in NSW PCYC State Titles 27th & 28th Mar and if they did so would get beaten to a pulp since they have never had any sparring. Cant find out whos the new head of PCYC boxing, anyone know? I really need to contact him and see whats going on.
Thanks everyone for the info, i phoned the manager and had a talk with her about it, she said that it come from State Office, i asked to see the policy and whos the new guy that took over from Ostini, she didnt know and asked me to call her back on Tuesday that she will make some calls. She then said that its not boxing anymore, its boxing for fitness and apparently the trainers dont want any sparring? She said i know that sounds bad but ive given them full control and its their gym now. I asked how boys can prepare for fights blah blah, thats when she said they are not training guys for fights? I told her they have sparring in North Sydney PCYC etc, didnt seem to matter. She said they got a bad name for sparring after letting Grayem Melbourne run an Indignouse program, he got some of the boys bashed and put them in fights on his shows to make money from em when they shouldnt have even been fighting, 2 weeks training for some he threw in, gave the club a bad name apparently and thats half the reason she dont want no sparring.
