TC I did a bit of ringing around and found out the new guy is Joel Keegan ring the person at PCYC and ask for his number.
Wouldn't you prefer those boys you train to be in a different ,non-violent sport other than boxing. I mean it's not exactly healthy getting a bloody nose and being bashed in the head everyday.
thanks cedrich, ill see how i go but wont hold my breath as he wouldnt even speak to me whilst i there the other night. Ranser, yes i would prefer the boy i train sticks to his football instead of boxing and ive told him this but its also his choice, the very least i can do is support that choice by help him and giving him the correct training and decent sparring.
TC I was in Wagga training Joey Williams and the rules the pcyc had made me walk away from the place. They have people in charge who have no idea about life let alone boxing. Joey moving back to Sydney was such a blessing. Aboriginal kids approached me but the prices the pcyc wanted to charge them made them return to football. I am just glad Im out of the place.
So true balmain, I trained at the wagga pcyc for two years 04-06 with geoff while attending school over there and the fees were prohibitive for school kids, it was obvious that the funds from boxing class werent being used to buy decent gear for that gym either
$20 they are charging now, well in Albury anyhow. I know some of the kori kids and homeless kids cant afford this, i remember when it used to be gold coin donation, whats happen to those days? I think most people sooner or later who have put in the yrs at PCYC work out that the place is its worst own enemy. I remember the Wagga gym, canvas stretched over the concrete floor lol, Albury gym was the hilton compared to Wagga, its shocking how run down they let some of the gyms. I spent about 4 days welding up new boxing stations etc, when i left the place they ripped the gym apart and put it upstairs, turned the boxing gym into a weights room. Ive been stung a few times by PCYC, not sure why i keept going back, i rekon it was the passion for training homeless kids knowing i was helping them get onto the right track through boxing but if you dont have the clubs support its an uphill battle getting more gear, training acreditation for other trainers to help etc. I was told that 3 boxers from PCYC in Albury competed in a league show on the weekend in Corowa. The trainers at Albury are association, im pretty sure all of PCYC is association, they dont care about the kids anymore its just the money.
Your defo not the only person with problems with the PCYC... back when i was trainin with them a few years ago we got the f all support for them. my 2 trainers did it for free and told the pcyc that they would walk away if the tried chargin anyone more then $10 a week for adults and $8 for jnr which they reluctanty agreed to but apart from that nothin at all..... we got no help wit using the pcyc cars to travl for fights unless my trainers argued it out. we never once got support for accomodation, even when we fought at the 07 pcyc titles in Woolloomooloo. Yet they gave the gymnastics team whateva they wanted... they seem to have it in for boxing at the pcyc Edit: although sparring was always allowed and never a problem no matter how bloody my nose got lol.we also fought numerous times in the league as well due to lack of financial support to get to ABA fights that were generally further away
Hey Sam, i had that same problem m8 when i was there. 8$ for kids and $10 for adults, this was the same price as commercial gyms. Being that PCYC is non profit the prices didnt reflect this, i had the price droped to $4 for kids and $8 for adults. The deal with alot of the PCYCs was they got support from their local council for a 1 dollar 100 year lease, i dont know the particulars but this is where the gold coin donation orignated from. ALL activities were to be gold coin donation. Some managers are good and i think this is what it comes down to with support. During the duration i was there the place went through 3 managers, one of them was an azz and wouldnt spend a cent on boxing, however like you experianced already. This guy supported the gymnastics as the activity officer was the gymnastics coach, they spent money on boxes and boxes of gymnatic phamplets etc The new manager was a former football ONM president, he was alot better, spent a few grand on the gym, got new gloves for the boys and thats how i welded up the new stations, purchased the steel , few new bags etc The problem i had was the police making profit from the club, whilst guys like me just plug along for free. They had a police officer running his own Kickboxing Company in there, selling T shirts, private lessons etc, he would hire the gym out for 20$ an hr and have upto 14 people at a time, charging each one of them $12 per session plus membership joining fees. They call these guys private facilitators, i had to fight tooth and nail to get more days because the private facilitator was given priority, i had to complain to PCYC boxing over it because no way should private facilitators have priority over PCYC members for use of the facilities. I Was basicly being kicked out of the gym on set days i had because this guy wanted them, i felt he was getting special treatment because he was a cop. Im not sure if other gyms are allowing this but its a discrace to PCYC imo to allow a police officer to make profit from a non profit orgnisation.
Yeah for sure, pcycs being run like a private gym is up to ****. The whole idea is to get kids in who have no money and are therefore at risk of becoming an offender, if it costs them $12 a session to learn how to box or whatever it is the D was teaching it just defeats the purpose. The kids won't spend time at the pcyc because they cannot afford it. When I was at Griffith pcyc the manager there made everyone pay $20 a week to go to boxing ( I had no objection to that, they do have expenses after all) but what gave me the shits was that she would pick certain kids and let them attend all classes for free because she felt they were 'at risk' kids, most of these blokes would turn up to the gym with a massive attitude, get free food and drink and act like dicks in general. Some also had boxing boots and shorts purchased for them for tournaments they never went to. What they needed was discipline, yet if she felt that they were treated too harshly she would take them out of the gym. When I suggested that some kids who lived around my area were as keen as mustard to come up and learn how to box but couldnt afford it, she told me that unless she considers them to be 'at risk' they will have to find the money like everyone else. Its not just killing amateur boxing its killing the Pcyc's and everything that they were established for
