No way Showtime keeps Mayweather on the Cinco de Mayo weekend...

I don't need to explain why it makes no sense from a demographic standpoint to square off against Canelo-Cotto on Cinco de Mayo. I'll even ignore it for now.

The reason Showtime wants this fight pushed has everything to do with Floyd's massive per-fight guarantee.

There's simply no way that the PPV's cannibalizing each other can end with Showtime making a profit because of that high overhead expense. Canelo-Cotto, even if it sells less, will be much more profitable to the promoters and network because the fighters will each make considerably less off the top. Alvarez and Cotto combined still make millions less per fight than Floyd does.

Not only does this lower the break-even point for HBO, but it also gives them the flexibility to undercut Mayweather's PPV on price and fund a stronger undercard while still turning a profit.

Anything short of a Pac fight for Floyd is going to be a less compelling matchup, and Showtime will have to charge more for it.

Look for step-aside money to be offered for Cotto-Canelo to move dates. It's cheaper to do that than to lose millions facing off against it head to head. If that doesn't work, it's not going to be Cotto-Canelo moving. Showtime's got no choice but to pay the right people to move unless they want to take a bath in red ink.

I've just sort of been operating under the assumption that step-aside money would be doled out ever since the Cotto vs. Canelo date in May was first announced. :conf It seems like the obvious way for it to play out.

I'd rather not watch a Black American fighter fight on a Mexican national holiday, thank you.

Cotto/Canelo is all that interests me on that date.

It's gotta be. Just makes no business sense for it not to be the way it plays out.

Even though Canelo-Cotto could still turn a profit on less sales, they'll almost assuredly each get PPV upside, so it's still in their interest to play ball and take the payoff.

If, for whatever reason, a payoff agreement can't be reached, that's the card that can be ran profitably.

Except Cotto might well be inclined to take the step aside money to have the fight held in MSG in the 2nd week in June (the Puerto Rican holiday, IIRC).

Since Cotto Promotions will involved in the promotion, I could very easily see this scenario coming to pass....:think

I personally rather watch anything but a boring ass Mayweather cherry pick so he can do enough just to win!

But before we rush to judgement on who Canelo will fight Cotto hasn't committed to anything so we will have to wait and see .

About time someone brought this up.

People forget that Cotto acted like a Diva with Martinez and I doubt he sees Canelo as the A-side over him.

Also, Mayweather is the proven draw and I don't see it a good business move to contend with Mayweather for ppv dates. Canelo got his ass whooped by FLoyd so it boggles me how he demanding to "reclaim" a date that he never owned. Oscar and Floyd have used Cinco De Mayo as the last 2 ppv kings. Nelo is young and can wait til next year once Mayweather retires.

    1. The Mayweather Gym has had a number of their high profile fighters busted for PED use and is also a well known hangout in Vegas for PED users and Pushers. A number of their Gym security team have also been busted for PED dealing as well as a number of other Narcotics.

    2. The Mayweather family, Geoff, Sr and Roger all had full heads of hair well into their 40's. Floyd was bald by the time he was 35.

    3. Floyd has already failed 3 USADA tests which have been hushed up due to their client being Floyd Mayweather jr. Countless noted journalists have asked to see the testing results for his fights with Mosley, Ortiz and Miguel Cotto and been refused.

    4. Floyd has not allowed any kind of USADA testing for his last 4
fights versus Guerrero, Alvarez and the two Maidana fights.

    5. Wild and violent mood swings which are associated with Roid Rage. Floyd has already beaten up kids, women and involved in countless other confrontations against innocent people.

    6. Stuttering - A common problem associated with long term PED and DRUG usage.

    7. Functional illiteracy - Another common by-product through PED use is the inability to focus on simple tasks such as basic levels of reading and writing.

    8. No sign of physical slippage in his hand and foot speed or his timing, accuracy and alertness levels in the ring even after 30 years of boxing including all the wear and tear associated with such a tough sport.

    9. His past history of hand doping that included injecting Lidocaine and Xylocaine into them.

    10. Narcissistic personality disorder - Another sign of long term drug and PED use is the inability to relate to the real world and make accusations against others that you yourself are feeling guilty about.

Why would HBO not take this opportunity to step on Floyd's neck and make Showtime PPV take a hit by jumping their PPV date?

HBO also has a Golovkin fight scheduled the following week after the Cotto/Canelo PPV replay.
