While i was never a big fan, I was saddened the last couple of times i saw him... and I have been thinking that he is through.

Maybe Roach CAN do some good as noted above.

But- I'm not sure he can do enough.

Change of trainer at this point will make no difference. He's too old and to fragile now to change his ways and improve his boxing. He always was and always will be a one trick pony.

Yeah. Bute was never really anything special. A new trainer isn't going to change that.

One loss and Bute hasnt been the same. Before the loss, Bute was looking good beating who was in front of him in -

    IBF SMW champ Berrio,
    future WBA SMW champ Magee,
    future WBC SMW champ Bika,
    Andrade who beat Steiglitz,
and beat other frindge contenders in Zuniga, Miranda, Brinkley who had beaten C Stevens, Mendy, G Johnson

Bute was good enough that at one point he was not "worthy" enough for Ward!

I heard Froch sometimes walks Bute's soul around Nottingham. Since he claimed ownership of it, he's had a hard time training it not to instantly void its bowels at the sight of its master, but it's apparently very friendly and docile.

like you said to me the last time we debated, the belts aren't important, but you continue to use them to 'beef up' fighters who are nothing special without referencing them

Its not to beef anyone up, its so that people know who im referring to, like casual posters like yourself who are not familer if it is not in your home country

Lucian Bute was a very good fighter. The left uppercut to the body that he used quickly became the single most effective punch in all of boxing. He knocked out some tough guys with it. His downfall, in my eyes, began with Glen Johnson. I felt that the fight with Glen Johnson was where he had to make a statement. Johnson had performed admirably in stopping Allan Green (no matter how much of a never was HE turned out to be) and landing many hard blows on Carl Froch and actually pushing Froch back the entire fight. I felt Glen Johnson had given SUCH an effort against Carl Froch that he was sure to be spent (and he basically never gave that level of performance again) and so Lucian Bute - in need of proof of worth - was supposed to go in there and do what he had been doing best. Outbox a guy hunched over walking forward with whom he enjoyed a speed advantage over and eventually plant his left uppercut into Glen's body and be the first since Hopkins to stop him.

What did he do instead? He sorta listlessly jabbed to a safety first decision over a Glen Johnson who, indeed, finally no longer showed fire or passion. I felt the 'vibe' there that Bute was not what he was supposed to be. He never even TRIED to throw that body left uppercut at Glen Johnson for fear of getting hit hard. I knew without knowing that Bute had confidence and chin issues. I was still fooled against Froch, though. I considered it a 50/50 sorta fight based on possible outcomes but favored the idea that Bute's hard 1-2 combinations would hold Froch off long enough to plant that left uppercut to the body of Froch [whom I believe possibly does not actually take it well to the body just going by how sturdy his chin is and how his body type looks] and score a late rounds stoppage in a star making performance.

I wrote off the Johnson fight as Bute being uncomfortable with Johnson's short, weaving pressure style and being unable to get off the power punches against him but saw Froch as a more upright target with his chin in the air and his solar plexus also an inviting target. Jumped onto my boxing results site that day, 'Froch Decimated Bute In Five To Capture Title' - and was quite shocked that Froch could win so quickly as I was sure a Froch victory would have come via late rounds pressure and Bute gassing out. Read the report, even more shocked that Froch truly DID decimate him. Youtube, watched the fight and still couldn't believe my eyes but by now focus shifted from shock that Froch did it to Bute SO badly... not doing it. He literally looked like a deer in headlights and just got completely run over. I felt bad for Bute. This was his first unanimously accepted world class opponent and he got run through like he didn't belong in a boxing event of that magnitude. I felt bad knowing the critics were given fuel for a lifetime of fire.

Since then? Bute has yet to recover. I missed both his fight with Grachev and fight with Pascal but just upon reading reports of the fight I know that Bute has yet to recover. He apparently was afraid to throw punches against either guy and any time they touched him he apparently went into a mild panic wherein he shelled up and seemed to act hurt even if he wasn't just because he mentally thought he was getting hurt.

So, yeah... not good. I doubt ANYTHING could ever fix Lucian Bute. Definitely he will never again be the Lucian Bute that utilizes fast hands, good movement and good combination punching in order to land massive fight changing/ending left hand shots. Lucian Bute at his best held the confidence of one punch power put together with the knowledge that he had the skills to deliver that power. Lucian Bute without confidence is almost a joke, though. He has no belief in his ability to hit a guy harder than they will hit him. He is literally afraid to be in the ring. He may as well have been plucked off the street when he has no confidence because he will freeze up like he knows he is in over his head like a guy off the street anyway.
