The belt doesn't bring prestige to the fighter. The fighter brings prestige to the belt.

Gennady Golovkin is a natural Middleweight. He has zero trouble making 160. He fits it like a glove. He's not a big Middleweight. Why leave to go fight bigger men if you can make the weight limit with ease?

You guys demanding he move up are missing the obvious.
I believe he is looking to break the MW defense record.

THAT will secure his legacy as one of the greatest MW in history.
Sure--you guys can ignore it or say it's not a big deal. And to you, maybe it's not. But it will mean something to the boxing writers and HOF when it's time to punch his ticket. He will be the record holder in one of the most historic divisions in the sport.

I dont believe now that he is this close, he will leave the division until he breaks the record.

Why don't you tell GGG that? He's planning on a move to 168 regardless of what GOONS think.

Are you suggesting that Golovkin is struggling to make the 160 pound limit these days? Because that's just not true.

No, but you want him to stay, while he said once he collects the WBO strap, that's it he's moving up to 168.

Because there is nothing left for him at 160. There are bigger fights for him if he moves up. Why not add to his achievements by becoming a champion in a second division? The only reasons for him to stay at 160 now is either because he doesn't believe he can beat the guys at 168 and/or to break the record for defences at 160. IMO breaking the record by fighting weak opposition is less impressive than moving up and becoming the man in a second division.

If he wants to leave 160 pounds let him leave. But I don't see why he must leave. I don't ever expect a fighter to leave his natural weight class. The reason we have weight classes is to allow fighters to compete at their best weight.

To you it might be less impressive...and that's cool. But to the boxing historians and sports writers and the HOF, it will be a big deal.

What if he does both? Breaks the record then moves up? Maybe that's why he wanted this fight made quickly so he can get another one in this year. I'm sure he realizes that time is not on his side.

One reason to stay at 160 pounds is that's his job. He's a professional Middleweight prizefighter. Who's fighting weight is 160 pounds. He's the best person in the world at his job. There's no shame in that.

This. And at the rate he fights he will break the record next year. He'll move up after that and fight the top guys their to cement his legacy.... At least that's my hope.

No person should put legitimate stock in the defense record bs, Golovkin was not a REAL Champ til 2014 at the earliest and only has 5/6 defenses of a Legit title.
A record based off beating bums and defending a JR Varsity Belt is not HOF worthy although in this era of trying to manufacture champs u guess people like you do find it impressive.

I mean seriously that's like claiming Robert Guerrero is a legit 5/6 division Champ if you don't agree that he is there is no reason to give a pass for this bullsh!t from GGG
