Exactly. Angott was known to clinch a lot, so I won't fault SRR there, but otherwise, nothing spectacular. People see what they wanna see. Edit: And if that was FMJ not SRR, you'd be hearing about how Angott is a bum/weight drained/old/shot/has over 20 loses, and Floyd is still quacking like a duck.
if you're not convinced then check out the infamous sixth famous with LaMotta or the handful of footage there exists of him in the 40s&50s. honestly, if you can't appreciate the man's style, i don't know what to say. his technical ability is off the charts, with every punch in the book delivered with perfect leverage, and the kind of counterpunching that would make Toney envious. all this on an athletic marvel
Robinson is the greatest ever. Here's another vid [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcNedh3Rkuw[/ame]
You're way over-romanticizing a bygone era my friend. He is a great fighter, I never said otherwise. His footwork is accurate, he's always balanced, he throws with concussive power and good speed at the same time, I see all that. But he's far from flawless, and too many fanboys come on here, hear he's the GOAT, post a few vids and gush about his greatness and say things like "this is why floyd and manny will never hold a candle to SRR" to get the whole forum to say things like "great post", because its heresy not to, when in reality, Floyd and Manny are technically just as good. Can you seriously watch Manny throw 6-8 balanced, well timed punches in amazing speed, all with power and tell me that there's something in these vids that you see that tops that? Come on man, SRR was great, his record is great, his legacy is great, but we don't need to make some kind of cult around it.
Yeah, I really do. I think that FMJ is defensively better than Robinson by quite a bit. Other than that I think he has the edge on both guys in basically every single respect. He threw more damaging combinations than both, had a great jab, was a more versatile puncher than either guy by far, has better footwork(balance and rotation for power better than both, and effective offensively and defensively). He had a ****ing iron chin to boot. His combination of speed, power, boxing IQ, durability, and opposition/comp is way higher than Manny or Floyd. And i'm not even an SRR nuthugger or a huge fan. I think his status as the GOAT has a lot of challengers. Manny and Floyd are not those challengers.
Robinson fought a bunch of cheap opponents. SRR was dropped by B-level boxers like Graziano, LaMotta. SRR wouldnt stand a chance with top fighters like Hagler, Hearns, etc.
As I said, I don't do greatest of all-time lists. I stopped doing that because it seemed foolish comparing fighters in different eras and saying this guy is better than so and so. Saying SRR is better than say a Harry Greb or Ray Leonard or Henry Armstrong or whomever just seemed foolish when all of them are in the same class of greatness. I only compare fighters during their own era. Sugar Ray Robinson in his era, IMO, was the best.
