Really? I know the fight just like when I saw it a week after Duran-DeJesus 3 in 78. A great fight but I am curious as to why it is yr fav fight ever? Message me if you want to discuss.

Hard to define why one loves something? Why do I like crab better than lobster? Perhaps the way it explodes on my taste buds? Why does this fight have such a favorable place in my heart?

I love the crisp punching and find Escalera largely underrated or at least under appreciated and largely under discussed. Arthur Mercante calls this the most brutal fight he ever saw, and the amount of punishment dished out and endured is incredible to me.

Escalera rebounding from an early KD, Arguello looking as good as ever. Escalera coming on strong and seemingly has Arguello out on his feet. Arguello digs deep and snatched victory from what looked like defeat moments ago. I love the 2nd fight as well. But for me it pales to the epic first encounter.

Sanchez vs Nelson and Arguello vs Escalera I are my two favorites? Why? I have no clue? Perhaps nostalgia? Perhaps something in these 2 contests just resonates deeply within me? Not sure I have ever been asked why one is my favorite before...not sure I have a good answer?

The World Boxing or International Boxing mag had a great article on it in the issue with Duran on the cover. Great fights indeed. Also the great story from World or International with. The Sanchez-NELSON fight with LEONARD ON THE COVER. Yellow mag. Moore story and Duran interview. I miss all those times still have all the mags and read them. Will probably bury me in them. Love em after watching a fight then read in each mag about it. Up to 1987.

Escalera wad a fine champ and all action fighter. No matter what Alexis did Alfredo kept coming back. Was actually excellerating in the rds before the lip caused stoppage. I loved the hometown crowds from PR, Panama, Argentina Korea Japan. Way into the fights! Glad I saw it.

I’ll double down on Willie vs. Johnson.

Good story Pastrano (a true colorful character) told about that fight — he was a substitute for a substitute when Mina and then Hank were injured in training. Willie told the story that he got the call (I think from Angelo Dundee) saying, ‘They need a title challenger for Harold Johnson. They’re offering it to you.” Willie said he replied, “Are you kidding? Tell them no. That mother-f***er can punch!”

Johnson was a machine. This fight was in 1963 and Harold hadn’t lost since 1955, something like 20 in a row. Willie put on a masterclass display to eek it out.

Cool story! Hopefully this will be one of the ones to come...hopefully Duran will disappear for a while now since we have done him twice. But this is one I want to watch even more now,

A vote for the Griffith-Rodriguez series if we’re looking for close, controversial decisions.

Does everyone agree that competitive fights that go the distance (or near the distance) make for better FOTWs than more one-sided brilliant performances?
