Fighters that aren't Muhammad Ali's, Roberto Duran's or Rocky Marciano's... But a cut below with extremely impressive resumes none the less. Lets do what we've done in other threads and pick a fighters best five wins. How about Ken Buchanan? Beats a 19-0 Chang Kil Lee in two. Strangely, Lee had a win over Guts Ishimatsu who would later beat Ken. Ends Carlos Ortiz's career in impressive fashion. Carlos was at the end of his career but he was on a solid winning streak. Twice beats Ismael Laguna, who again has a win over Guts Ishimatsu who Ken himself couldn't beat. The last two names could be any number of solid wins. Frankie Otero (Again, twice) Jim Watt, Al Ford, Carlos Hernandez, Donato Paduano, and so on. So, who've you got?
I think some might argue Kenny is indeed an ATG. Some have Braxton/Qawi falling short, he's got a fine track record. Marlon Starling too.
I'm basically talking about the very top of the elite class of fighters. I think Ken was slightly below that. All I'm saying.
Is Kenny as great as Duran? Is Dwight as great as Micheal Spink's? That's my measuring stick and the kind of fighters I'm looking for.
This content is protected Fritzie Zivic fought in the Golden Era and he fought everybody. He's got wins over Armstrong in '41, Kid Azteca, Bummy Davis, Lamotta, Sammy Angott, Eddie Booker, and... Charlie Burley. Naming all the solid guys he fought over 233 fights and 17 years would take too long.
I don't consider Joey Maxim an ATG, so I think he takes this. Ray Robinson, Jersey Joe Walcott, Floyd Patterson, Jimmy Bivins, Gus Lesnevich, Freddie Mills, Bob Satterfield. That's an excellent resume by any standards (even if you take out the Robinson win due to the circumstances).
Virgil Hill: beat: Bobby Czyz, James Kinchen; Fabrice Tiozzo 2 times; Henry Maske; Valery Brudov lost: Dariusz Michaelchewski; Roy Jones Junior; Thomas Hearns; Firat Arslan Dariusz Michaelchewski: beat: Graziano Roccigiani 2 times; Virgil Hill; Montell Griffin; Richard Hall 2 times lost: Julio Cesar Gonzalez; Fabrice Tiozzo Henry Maske: beat: Charles Williams; Iran Barkley; Graziano Roccigiani 2 times; Virgil Hill lost: Virgil Hill Sven Ottke beat: Charles Brewer 2 times; Glen Johnson; Silvio Branco; Anthony Mundine; Rudy Markussen; Byron Mitchell; Mads Larsen; (Robin Reid) lost: - (Robin Reid)
Lloyd Marshall He beat Ezzard Charles Charley Burley Holman Williams Jake Lamotta Joey Maxim Teddy Yarosz Jack Chase Freddie Mills Lou Brouillard Ken Overlin Eddie Babe Risko Anton Christoforidis Shorty Hogue I consider Lloyd Marshall a great fighter, but many here at ESB underate him. He was arguebably the best out of the murders row. Another non ATG with a very good resume is Joey Maxim He beat Sugar Ray Robinson Floyd Patterson Jersey Joe Walcott Jimmy Bivins Bob Satterfield Freddie Mills
SuzieQ is spot on with Lloyd Marshall. The guy has an amazing resume with the likes of Charles, Burley, Williams and LaMotta all notable scalps but didn't get inducted into the IBHOF.
Zivic and Maxim came straight to mind. Lloyd Marshall doesn't count. He IS an all-time great... How about Ernesto Marcel? Too good for this category?
