This is a question more for the guys who do boxing as a hobby. How much do you pay a month for the gym, and how much have you spent on boxing equipment?

I pay about $70/month, and the only thing I bought when I started was a set of bag gloves and hand wraps for about $50. I actually planned on quitting after the 1st month, but decided to stick with it.

3 months later I bought my 1st mouthpiece for about $10 so that I could start sparring. Figured that'd be the last piece of equipment I'd buy.

I'm finishing up my 6th month and I just bought my first piece of headgear for about $80. The headgear at the gym isn't in the best condition, and I hate the way the smell sticks on me after I've sparred. The sparring gloves at the gym aren't in the best condition either, so now I'm considering buying some sparring gloves. The cheapest decent set of 16 oz gloves in my country is about $110. I'm also considering buying a pair of 12 oz or 14 oz training gloves to hit the bag with since my thin bag gloves (I think they're 8oz) don't offer much hand protection. I was thinking about getting the cheap Everlast Pro Style Training gloves for this. I don't wanna shell out too much money if I do end up buying sparring gloves and training gloves, and these were only $50 at the store I went to.

Overall, boxing's turning into a much more expensive hobby than I originally anticipated. Curious how much other people have spent.

Boxing is a reasonably expensive hobby. I used to spend over $400 a month on training (lots of one-on-ones), and I spent multiple hundreds of dollars on equipment.

Now I've got all the equipment I need and I've switched gyms, not doing private training anymore, so I'm only spending about $80 a month.

Over the last 2 years, about $400 plus $70 / mth on gym dues.

I compete, but I don't see how non-competing and competing makes any difference - you're still buying the same sparring equipment.

So all in all, it's not pocket change, but I think it's on the lower end, compared to other sports. I can't imagine how much someone would spend in ONE season for hockey equipment and other fees.

I assume that most hobby boxers would be more inclined to just use the equipment provided by the gym.

Geez you blokes spend A LOT on gym fees!!

back when i was boxing competitivly i was heaps less
for peeps under 18 the gym only cost $4 a session but if u only had to pay twice a week. so for a full week training only cost me $8.... for over 18's it was a whopping $1 extra ($5 a session $10 a week).
We were pretty lucky though i guess. both the guys running the gym did it for free and the only cost was put on because the youth club the gym was in charged to use their room. for that got full access to the boxing room and weights rooom. From memory i think they wanted $5 a session for everyone but the coaches barked back and told them no they didnt want to charge that much. Also lucky the coaches were good friends with a few blokes who owned business' around town n they would donate money to help us out if we needed any gear as well as help with money to travel away to fights.

anyway a part from that i spent....

    $10 on wraps
    $10 appox
$20 on wraps (first pair were to short n ****)
    $20 approx for groin gaurd
$20 approx to get some singlets with the gym name on them printed to wear for fights
$30 on a mouth guard (my old man later brought me anothe rone for $15 coz the expensive one i brought was to bulky and hard to breath through. the cheaper one was much better!)
$80 approx on trunks (brought a pre made pair for bout $50 and $30 on material to have a friend make me some with my name on them, rest were free from the PCYC)
$80 give or take a couple dollars for mitts
$170 for my boxing boots (pretty sure i got ripped right the **** off for those. brought them from a specialty boxing shop bout 6 years ago but now days every metro dick head wears them for fashion and u can buy them everywhere for like $120 dont know if they've gotten cheaper over time though)

got my head gear from a mate who wasn't boxing anymore and for the rest just used the gym gear.

spent my fair share on it but lucky as my parents helped me and all my stuff is still in good enough condition so if i got back into it seriously i could keep using it.

Here, it depends where you live.

If you live in a nicer area; the gym fees are going to be upwards of $100, but the gym will have nice equipment, a weight room, and classes.
If you live on the rough side of town, the gym fees will be around $30; but the gym will have a very spartan environment.

Yeah, the cheaper gym may have great fighters & coaches; but there may be other considerations, like worrying about your car getting broken into or being ostracized at the gym.

for the rest of it... I have competed in the past and am trying to compete again - just have had bad luck with injuries/illness in training. But here's my gear...

So far, not an awful lot.

    £5 for wraps.
    £10 for mouthguard.
About £32 a month for the fees.

Only been at it for about a month now. 3 or 4 times a week. At the minute I'm only really in it for the fitness and as a new hobby, and I'm pretty shite at it to be honest, but I hope that I can eventually get better and then maybe compete a bit next year.

The gym has a lot of gear, but when it starts getting busy come September time I might have to buy a pair of bag and/or sparring gloves for myself. Will probably buy a pair of boots, too.

Used my new headgear for the first time today. Didn't notice how thin it was compared to the headgear they have at my gym. I guess that can be expected when comparing $160 headgear to $80 headgear though. I definitely felt the punches a lot more than I did before. Didn't help that we sparred with 14 oz gloves for the first time instead of 16 oz either. Even though the store says no exchanges if the gear has been used, I'm wondering if I can/should take it back and spend more money to get some better headgear.

i think you should do bag work with 8oz gloves, toughens up your hands alot, for me anyway. My hands are so much more conditioned. I spar with 14oz though, feel so heavy those things, just imagine competing with 10oz ohhh yess

    gloves- $30
    wraps- $10
training- depends how you measure this...every gym was different...$2000 is about right.
    mouthgard- $5
    ring timer- $20
    focus mitts- $50

a few more expenses for other arts, like shingards for muay thai were $40

Its a lot, but better than getting beat up in school or being afraid of the loser on the bus.
