Danny "Little Red" Lopez. Fought like a tiger; great TV "fan friendly" boxer. Fought twice against the immortal Salvador Sanchez.
The guy fought for the WBC World Featherweight title 10 (ten) times so somebody associated him with skill. And he won 8 out of those 10 times...the only guy to beat him was the immortal Salvador Sanchez. Sure, no skills...okey dokey.
He hit like a truck but lacked defence. That's why he was ko'd in 5 of his 6 losses . Watch his fights then come back to me. It's a typical Danny Lopez fight. He comes to fight. He don't mess around, feeling the other guy out. Sure, he gets hit a lot. But these guys have got to throw their bombs early, if they're going to throw any at all. Usually they aren't around after the 3rd round." -Bennie Georgino, Lopez' manager. "I still get hit too often with rights. I guess I'll have to tie my left hand around my head for a month to teach me to keep it up." -Danny Lopez
I've watched his fights. I'm back to you. His record was 42-6 and you mention his 6 losses, but not his wins that included Sean O'Grady, Ruben Olivares (!), Mike Ayala, and David Kotey! All champs one way or another! I'm assuming your favorite boxers either never got hit, or rarely got hit. Willie Pep? Paulie Spadafora? Whatever. You can have the last word; I'm working.
I loved Lopez, he was my kind of fighter but skilful he was not.O Grady was an 18 years old kid . Give that kid five years and he's going to be an excellent fighter." -Danny Lopez . Olivares was a shop -worn bantamweight nearly 35 years old!. Lopez was in lots of big fights because his bombs away style put bums on seats , not because he was "sublimely skilled " which was the OP's criteria. You really take this personal don't you?
tony Thompson and leonard bundu both do/did some really nice things while having decent but not great careers.
