How would this hypothetical tournament go?
Fight One: Hasim Rahman of his second WBC title run vs Sultan Ibragimov
Fight Two: Sam Peter that beat Maskaev vs Lamon Brewster that beat Wlad.
Fight Three Valuev first title run vs Povetkin as regular champ.
Fight 4 Haye of Valuev fight vs Chagaev of his Valuev fight.
Winners of one and two face, winners of 3 and 4 face.

    Ibragimov TKO11 Rahman
    Peter UD12 Brewster
    Povetkin KO10 Valuev
    Haye SD12 Chagaev

    Semifinals:

    Ibragimov UD12 Peter
Haye vs Povetkin - tough fight to call. Probaly Haye by close decision

    Final:
Ibragimov vs Haye - razor-thin decision for either side in a very boring and tactical fight

what a sad indictment of how poor the period was for HW boxing. If we put aside the middlers, shot and semi shot guys, that leaves Haye, Pov, Iggy and one of Sugar Val and SHaggy

So Haye vs Pov, I can see Pov taking a split decision win.
Iggy vs either Valuev or SHaggy takes decision, narrow.

Pov vs Iggy, Iggy takes decision, split, or draw.

8 worked but for a tournament setup unless there were byes. Maskaev and Liakovich just seem a bit fluky to me as did Briggs so they were left out. Ruiz and Byrd I generally lump in with the period before the Klitschkos fully took over, but admittedly the same could be said for Brewster. If you had an improved format I would enjoy trying to pick a winner out of it.

shakiest on my Chagaev over Haye pick, I did accuse Haye of ducking him when champ
I think Peter was at his best in the first Wlad fight but I'm not sure if fits the thread

My Guess is Povetkin would win it all but fights with Peter or Brewster would be awesome fights

I am aware that both brothers held the lighter regarded WBO title previously. The time period I am chiefly discussing is post Lewis era and more specifically after Wlad won the IBF and started his proper reign (which should really rule out the version of Brewster that I had). Post second Wlad fight Byrd was more or less done, losing to a green Povetkin relatively easily. Ruiz as you said lost to most on the list already. Maskaev got the win over Rahman again and definitely seemed to have his number but got stopped soon after by Peter so I don't see him adding to much in this given time period (though maybe he should replace Rahman who likewise fizzled out after their 2006 meeting). Sanders didn't do anything of note after the Vitali fight which if we are using Wlad vs Byrd to rough as the start would rule him out as well.

Wlad post the second Byrd fight, while less aggressive clearly was harder to beat than the previous version. He has far better wins and fewer devastating losses as evidence of this, which is why that fight is picked as the rough starting point. Neither Byrd nor Sanders had a meaningful win after the date of the second Wlad/Byrd fight. Povetkin was clearly very good for the second Byrd fight but he certainly improved afterwards (which is why I did not pick that version).
I'll replace Rahman with Maskaev as there is not much separating the two. That being said I would struggle to call one stay busy fight a two year reign and also don't see the questionably chinned Maskaev making it past Peter or Brewster who he likely would not stop and would most likely catch him at some point.

Mods if possible change the Rahman option to Maskaev, can't change it myself.

I ended up with Povetkin vs Peter in the final, I think the post Klit Pove gets it done and takes him past 6/7 and then gets a late Stoppage, but the WBA one imo gets too agressive and loses to Peter by KO

    Could go either way
