To be put in a modern context. Someone like Froch seems to be very outboxable but seems to find a way to win.

I love watching the action fights though.

Do you get what I mean?

What about Luis Manuel Rodriguez? Ugly, but effective!

I think earlier picks Froch and Baer are good, too. Actually Froch reminded me of Baer in that he threw some really ungainly, wide shots but he managed to land them to great effect.

Because Gene outboxed Carmen twice en route to a pair of stoppage wins, I have to give that comparison to Basilio (also because Carmen additionally held both the WW and MW titles). There's plenty of footage of Gene moving around the ring laterally with some grace (most consistently on clear footage with Lausse). Anthropology aside, I don't consider Gene's versatility to qualify him for consideration here. He won major bouts with swarming, and also by moving and boxing. His footwork was too good, and he moves in and out on Florentino Fernandez too well. His face and physique were deceptive. Give Joe Frazier Gene Fullmer's mobility and Smoke defeats Foreman within the championship distance if properly prepared.

I think Antuofermo's Corro-Hagler I-Minter I (I thought the Mosquito won all three over the championship distance) string puts Vito in the running. Antuofermo looked horrible trying to box like a cutie, couldn't throw a straight punch or hook with leverage to save his life. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't his attrition knockout of a punched out and exhausted Cyclone Hart his only significant stoppage win on extant footage over a noted opponent?) Exciting fighter with underrated punch evasion (his cuts all came from butts though because he not only failed to protect his protruding brows but actually tried using his own head as a weapon) and supremely conditioned, but an attrition oriented swarmer who relied on a combination of physical strength and stamina to gas his opponents with relentless aggression and toughness.
