Nonito Donaire has looked lacklustre in recent fights, why do you think this is?

Has he really looked that bad? As Bryn says everyone is expecting a spectacular performance everytime out, so even if he wins every round but goes the distance it's not enough.

    Here's the problem.

    - They're trying to market him as a knockout artist and putting too much pressure on him to get spectacular KO's ever since the Montiel fight. This leads to him neglecting certain things like going to the body and working for it.

    - Nonito gets bored when he doesn't view what he's in with as a big challenge. The better the opponent and better he'll be. He must go into fights with the intention of just trying to win and not getting a big highlight reel KO.

    - He's putting too much into his punches. Which will cause him hand problems.

Nonito is doing just fine imo. He's lost a bit of time because imo he's been mismanaged. But he's still a special talent.

I went into it more in the 'technical' thread.

Guys already beat me to it.

  2. I can't fault anyone for getting bored fighting the likes of Narvaez.

Arum needs to make some proper fights for his charges.

    They make sense to me.

Maybe I'm being a little harsh on Nonito? The Narvaez performance wasn't that bad, but I really did expect him to put away a limited fighter like Vazquez, but Donaire didn't even look more than a level above him. He just seemed to lack ideas of how to break the guy if plan A isn't working.

Good post Slip. All those points make sense to me.

    tl;dr

the reason is because he is overrated. montiel was long in the tooth as we saw from his loding to terrazas. darchinyan walked into a big shot.

He seemed bored against Narvaez, but he looked up for it against Vazquez IMO and wasr really going for it at times. He just couldn't crack him, and being wild in trying to take him out led to him taking a lot of punches he shouldn't have. Looked a lot sharper in that fight, but still not upto standard.

I think Wilfredo Vasquez boxed far better technically than he did against Arce too, so maybe expecting him to be easily stopped as we all did was a mistake on our part based too much off of one fight where he was stopped on his feet. He got dragged into some kind of macho display that wasn't in his best interests in that fight. He fought a completely different fight against Nonito that was mostly risk averse, taking the odd shot when he had to, and picking the occasional spot to work. Nothing dramatic but kept a firm base to not get blown away easily.

In all honesty he's a natural counter puncher. Going forward and creating openings, he sucks balls. But throw at him and you're in the ****.

You may be correct Flea. It's still worth nothing nobody is coming close to winning even by forcing that out of Nonito because they struggle to be aggressive enough and maintain a balance.

Hearns had a similar "thing" with his wins at 160 lbs and above. With a few exceptions he either blew the guy out spectaculary or he didn't and the fight settled down after a few rounds and went the distance.

Personally i believe it's a lot to do with his mentality, he's a perfectionist and the problem is he wants and tries to fight punch perfect. He starts well and then runs out of idea's and doesn't do the basics to get the rewards.

Such as punching to create space, he seems to want to open the punching angles up with feints and drawing leads due to him wanting to counter. He becomes a bit complacent and seems to forget he's in a fight. I think he's felt in so much control that mentally he switches off about winning and tries to look for one punch to end fight.

Also noticed when a thread was posted in GF other week that he doesn't look that chiseled physically. He still retains his speed and his other tools but just something i noticed which differs from many others.

Could this be a similar case to Manny Pacquiao I wonder? Looking deverstating against a come forward aggressor, but confused and somewhat clueless against a smarter, counterpunching opponent.

Perhaps that is a little unfair. Doniare is a superb counter puncher. He doesn't look as good leading off against an opponent who just wants to survive

Donaire is a far better counterpuncher than Pacquiao though. So the difference is when opponents are aggressive they get any defensive holes ruthlessly exposed. That makes it very difficult to strike a balance where you're not only making Donaire look mediocre but you're actually going to make a case for winning the fight.

Good observations guys. That's just what I was looking for with the thread.
