Apparently, Donaire is set to vacate his belt and move up to face Montiel in March, on Showtime. The winner of this fight would be in a prime position to face the Darchinyan/Arce winner for the right to crown the divsion's first super unified champ. Another great matchup put on by Showtime. Who wins this fight?
Its hard to tell with Montiel. He is one of my favourite boxers (see my avatar), but he can be very erratic in his performances. IMO A-game Montiel (Hernandez, Castillo) would be too much for anyone at SFW or below, but when he is off his game he can stink the joint out (Johnson, Gonzalez). Donaire is not a massive puncher at FW (despite the Vic KO), but Montiel is at SFW. Donaire is a very good technician, but Montiel has some fantastic moves himself. Montiel has the experience and is very much in his prime; Donaire maybe has a couple of years to go yet. If A-game Montiel turns up against Donaire he wins the fight.
im rootin for donaire. donaire does very good in-fight adjustments and is as experienced as montiel imo. and nonito is ripe enough to move a weight higher at this point in his career..
exactomundo The Montiel that showed up against Castillo would destroy Donaire The Montiel that showed up against Gorres would get schooled by Donaire
Donaire TKO.. I am sure Donaire will pull this one off, unless he messes up his own training habit by being with his wife all the time
Thats it:good Just as I said. I'm no hugger. This is the two scenarios for a Montiel fight. It has nothing to do with getting up for a big name; Montiel just performs when Montiel wants to perform. He can either be a demon in the ring or a fairy. Doesn't change the fact that, on his night, he is one of the best boxers on the face of the planet.
Montiel performing when he wants to is not just the only valid question mark in this fight. There are also question marks on Donaire camp, like how's Donaire gonna be without his dad? Hell how good would he be without any sort of trainer in his side? What kind of effect does his domineering wife would have on his training? Honestly those are serious concerns we should look into. I know Montiel can be a bit lackluster probably because of not enough motivation but if this fight is really gonna come off, then this would be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, fight for Montiel especially since it would further give him the chance of unifying. He should be pretty motivated in this fight.
But, when Montiel fought Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson that was his biggest fight to date; and when Montiel fought Jhonny Gonzalez that became his new biggest fight fight to date. He was lacklustre in both and lost the fights. I have got to think that Montiel's problem is not one of "getting himself up for the fight" but something else. He just does not not perform on occasion. For all his apparent self-confidence it could actually be big-fight nerves that get to him.
