July fifteenth at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, on Showtime. The vacant WBC title, formerly held by Donaire in 2021, will be on the line. Donaire is currently ranked #1 and Santiago Barrios #4 by the WBC. Donaire in his career is 16-0 (12) versus Mexican opponents. Santiago Barrios fought to a 12 round split draw with Donaire's countryman Jerwin Ancajas in an IBF super flyweight title challenge half a decade ago - remarkably, his fifth drawn contest in 22 bouts until that point, and the only blemish on the Filipino's record between capturing and losing his title over a 6 year reign.
I really like Santiago, he's tough as nails and I enjoy watching him fight. But he has a terrible habit of standing directly in front of his opponents, squaring up while paying no heed to defense, and swinging for the fences. Which will make him a sitting duck for Donaire's left hook. I can see no other outcome but Peque getting brutally knocked the **** out here.
I actually think this is a very tough fight for Nonito. Santiago is a tough customer and is agile and quick. Hope the Filipino Flash pulls it out.
