whats the purpose of corkscrewing a punch, ending extended with your fist thumb to pinky parallel to the ground?Ive noticed that manny pacquiao throws a lot of his punches with his hand vertical, thumb pinky in the 12-6 position.it seemed to workout great using the jab to slice margaritos defense.
Cutting. Hold a glove against your moist forearm with pressure and twist it. Now imagine that same pressure amplified, fast, and over a bony part of your face. The skin can "pop" open. If you have dynamite in your gloves or are landing "harassing" punches, like your example, cutting is a secondary concern.
Additionally, I feel like it aligns my body better with the punch for some reason. Hard to explain...just kinda puts everything into alignment a little better. Adds a little snap to things.
I personally think it also helps to further lock the elbow which works well and saves energy against someone who is trying to walk through/smother some of your lighter shots.
Very true. I have tried to throw without the rotation (palms facing opponent or palms facing in and staying in) and it just doesn't feel as fluid. The traditional palms facing you at 45 degrees and then rotate down to the floor and slightly up just feels natural and fluid now. Might just be muscle memory though. :think
Are you ever supposed to lock an elbow while punching? Are you ever supposed to lock a joint ever in any sport or life situation?!?! :blood:nono A punch is to be withdrawn as fast as it is thrown. There should never be a locking of the joint. Hyper extension is a real danger. Also if a guy is walking you down. If your glove slides off of his slipping sweaty head or you miss? He slides right under your locked elbow and punishes your body and if you try to lower your elbow he follows up on your head. Come on man... :bart
i was told the reason for corkscrewing your hand like that was that it somehow lowers the chance of hurting your arm when throwing a punch. Dont know if this is true but that is what i was taught.
Simple really, when someone leans their head into their hands the way Margo does, rather than actually keeping their weight central and actually having their hands up, its means you can use the up-jab to pop the head out of the guard, then come over the top with the power hand. Its like kicking a football in the air, then volleying it as it comes down. The up-jab also helps you reload other punches, like when throw a 1 2, and fall short, you dont always have to pull out, you can throw an up-jab to get closer, which can set up another right hand. Watch Ward-Kessler, Ward does it over and over again, and the reason it lands over and over again, is because Kessler goes back on the line when attacked.
