Saturday on Showtime at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. WBC bantamweight title at stake, Oubaali's third defense. Having worn the same belt a decade ago (in 2011, for eight months with a single defense against Omar Andrés Narváez), the challenger is the current #1 ranked mandatory.

I can't see Donaire winning. His reflexes are shot and Oubaali has good in and out movement. Donaire only shot is to catch him coming in.

Donaire is my boy but he has been overrated, or I should say overstated, in the last couple years with the WBSS run. He's ancient. Glad the fight is happening and rooting for Donaire but have a bad feeling he will fall short.

Nonito will wreck Oubaali. Stylistically Donaire is all wrong for him. Sure Donaire hasn't looked great in recent years, although he managed to turn the clock back against Young, Burnett and Inoue. But part of the reason why he's looked so lackluster is because he's had to face an endless barrage of runners or guys who control range well. Which forced Donaire, who is a natural counter puncher, to be the aggressor, which is a role he's never been all that comfortable in. But the reason he had so much success against Inoue is because Inoue is an aggressive fighter. Well so is Oubaali, whose defense has a tendency to be shoddy at times which causing him to get hit clean a hell of a lot more than Naoya, and he also doesn't hit as hard. If Takuma's featherfists can shake him up, recklessly walking into one of Donaire's money punches and eating it full force, might be devastating.

Donaire by brutal KO, possibly even early.

Good write up, hope you are right! Crazy still seeing Donaire in title fights.

Yeah, this is one of those matches where I don't even have a even a fleeting doubt about the outcome. Not saying I can't be wrong, but usually when I'm this sure of an outcome, like I was with Figueroa/Nery and Taylor/Ramirez, I'm usually right. When in doubt, I should always throw my prediction out, like with Canelo/Saunders. Which I was quietly waffling on for weeks beforehand. So fingers crossed, Donaire can get the job done Saturday, and possibly go on to get that Rigo rematch he's been wanting so badly.

The problem is that Oubaali himself is a counter-puncher, but his timing, power, and technique all fall in the "fair to good" range - which of course pales to Donaire on each front, and by enough of a margin to more than offset the fact of Nordine being in his prime and Nonito being well past his. :deal:

Yeah, like you said.... he's not just a counter puncher, but an aggressive counter puncher, who tends once he lands a counter left on an opponent, he literally can't resist following up by launching little Nery like attacks, and he leaves tons of little openings for someone as well schooled as Donaire to see and exploit with relative ease. So no matter how shot Donaire may be, the power is the last to go, and even a Donaire at 50% probably has enough left to offset Nordine's youth and so so skillset.

I just worry, guys. Donaires freaking old now. And Inoue feels more like a "every great fighter has one great fight left..." more than I usually feel about that sort of thing.

Just checked. Oubaali ain’t no spring chicken himself. Almost 35 yet he’s only had 17 fights.I thought he was a lot younger like maybe late 20s.

Fought about 220 amateur bouts and turned pro super late.

Both guys been inactive since that Saitama show, Oubaali had a bad bout with Covid IIRC, is MUCH smaller, no spring chicken, has never faced a legit world class puncher and was hurt against Takuma.

Oubaali, had, the speed to make life difficult for Donaire, not sure he still does though. 35 year old post covid legs after 18 month lay off does not seem good for a mover. Donaire might be slow as mollases now a days, but I dare say he uses that to his advantage at times, and fights deliberately flat footed at times relying on his timing, size and power.

Can see Donaire inside or Oubaali decision
