Ali won the 3rd fight as well. I was there. Neither was outstanding. Ali did enough to win most rounds.
Can anyone provide 10 photos or video clips of Ali landing 10 solid -different- punches in Norton 3? Seriously, please share. I doubt it can be done. The best Ali fans can do is say "the fight was not a robbery". You might not call it a robbery (I would), but do you honestly think Ali won that night? If so, show us the punches. I see him missing all night, same with Shavers. Earnie's saying he didn't win has more to do with his personality than anything else. He adores Ali and I think he doesn't want to denigrate him. He certainly thought he won immediately following the fight.
ali won the second fight no doubt. ken norton couldnt even land a damn punch until halfway into the fight
IMO all three Ali-Norton fights were pretty clear cut. Norton won the first one, Ali the second, and Norton got totally, incredibly robbed in the third. Other than the third Norton fight, I don't see any of the Ali results in the 70s as that egregious. Young outscored Ali by a wide margin, but Young was so incredibly negative in his approach in that fight, that I'm not surprized by the result. Ali-Frazier had terrible reffing not bad judging. Ali should have been DQ'd for pushing Frazier's head down constantly, but given that huge edge by Tony Perez, I thought Ali won the fight. I don't think there was any fix in the third Norton fight. The post-Manila Ali was essentially a con man in the ring and most judges fell for his crap to some extent. If he flurried at the end of the round, he'd win the round even if he was completely inactive before that. His jabs were often counted as being the equal of harder shots by his opponents. If he was getting hit on the ropes some judges would conclude Ali meant to do it and not score for his opponents. One judge even scored for Ali in the first Spinks fight.
The media suffered from Ali hero worship and it began to seep out into the judges and general public by the end of his career. Ali had many iffy wins on his ledger. Not including the two Liston fights some of the more debated are: Doug Jones Henry Cooper Jimmy Young Ken Norton 3
I really disagree with this 3 times bull****. Kenny won the 1st clearly, possibly took the third (close fight) but the second was Ali's all the way. Ali decisively beat Norton the second time around. The Long Count.. Doug Jones was a close fight, Henry Cooper got cut to smithereens, and Young was an ugly ass fight that neither of them should've won.
I scored the Doug Jones fight 6-4 Ali, I also scored it years later 5-4-1 Ali so yes it was very close but I felt right man won. Henry Cooper did get cut to smithereens but this fight has the strongest argument that Ali should of lost the fight. I don't know if Angelo Dundee didn't know the Rules in Great Britain or just deemed his man hurt badly enough that Dundee supplied him with Smelling Salts after the knockdown. A strict no-no in Britain as only water is allowed as a stimulant to revive a fighter. All that cut glove nonsense conceals that fact that the ref had immediate grounds to DQ Ali. The Young fight was ugly but I clearly felt Young won even though he fought a spoilerish fight as was his style. Even giving Ali every close round I have him falling two rounds short. Norton 3- I scored by one round for Norton. So not a robbery but I think Refs got it wrong.
Bull****. I score fights honestly and there is no way Ali won, and if you think he did without problems, you are the short sighted one!
I am a fan of lots of great fighters, Ali included. No agenda from me, Stevie; I call 'em like I see 'em! I think some Ali apostles are slightly blinded by his great charisma and give him rounds because of it. Norton won the second fight in my opinion, if you see different, no problem.
The seeds for Ali's later medical difficulties were planted long before that third fight with Norton.
