Something I did notice about the footage though is it is speed up to about 10%+ it's original speed due to having been increased to 60fps. They are throwing and moving a little faster than in reality.
I never thought the flurry was enough personally, i thought Norton done enough in the first 2:30 seconds of the round. But then again your opinion is in line with the judges, as @Jel pointed out 2 of the 3 judges gave Holmes 15th round so what do i know.
I always wondered if Holmes' comeback toward the end of the round was blunted by the viewpoint of the camera angle. According to the announcer, Norton was really staggered, but iirc we can't see that. I did give the round to Holmes, but it was razor sharp. From what I could see, Kenny was mightily rocked by the left uppercut, and some of the snap went out of his punches after that. I didn't see Holmes get jolted like that in the round, though he took some real good shots.
I think it comes to down quantity vs quality, definitely Norton landed many more punches than Holmes in the round. But Holmes had the best moment of the round rocking Norton so it's what you like. It could be compared to Ali vs Shavers 15th round where Ali's flurry at the end won him the round, although i thought Ali's moment was longer and more emphatic.
If one of the opponents is actually, empirically shaken and/or staggered, while the other lands more shots but doesn't have the same effect, to me the staggerer takes the round. Which is one of the reasons I always have Hagler ahead 3 points in the Leonard fight
Totally agree with the concept of scoring more for punches that clearly hurt one fighter as opposed to those that don’t. That calls in the inherent feature of a relative measure in a boxing contest. A fighter being hurt lends to the workings of the more cut and dried criteria for a 10-8 round when a fighter actually hits the deck from the effect of a punch or punches. Of course, worst case scenario given failure to arise, initial KD becomes a contest ending KO. That very same punch or punches absolute might not hurt another, better chinned opponent whose greater resilience actually limits the potential scoring against them - just imo. Basically, a chin, a legit attribute,(great, average or bad) in boxing, factors very much in the perception of scoring. Of course the question of fighters being hurt and/or staggered does call in more subjective interpretation - but there are many instances where I think most would agree on the observed effect. Imagine being in a street fight and you land a nice, full steam 3-4 combo on the chin of the behemoth in front of you. The big fella doesn’t blink and hits you back with a causal jab that wobbles you and rocks you back on your heels. Would you necessarily feel that you had the upper hand? I think I’d be starting to plan my best “exit” strategy. Lol.
Thats the beauty of boxing we all see it different ways, i don't agree with your opinion about the Hagler fight or 15th round of Holmes/Norton. But i respect your opinion regardless.
I'd love to see if there was another angle to see what happened a little better. That said, I'd bet on Holmes's durability over Norton's any day of the week.
Ofc Holmes is an ATG often said to come to prominence at the wrong time which I agree with. Being sandwiched between Alis rein n Tysons short reign is just downright unlucky but he did what he could. Even put up a solid effort much past prime in the 90s. Norton had a damn good career nothing to n ashamed of in the ring. Gave both Ali n Holmes hell and may need more flowers. Gonna rewatch this thx! Meantime gonna research his appearances on KOK n Fight Night games lol.
It wasn't just being sandwiched between two popular champs. It was being sandwiched between arguably the two most popular champs ever (honorable mention to Joe Louis). You couldn't pick a worse time to land. Norton was a great fighter and an even better man. I'm a fan.
Truth. Tyson is still immensely popular almost 20 years after his career has ended. I would argue he's had a rebrand but I was just happy to have him in FNR4 that trailer still shakes me lol. I would need to research the man more to speak on that part but that's my ignorance but as a fighter I've always respected him.
I can see a case for this kind of a gap in the scoring. There are enough swings rounds to make it work, I think.
