He could have done 1500 rounds with ali and holmes and even his grandmother, still got destroyed early by every hard puncher that he fought , period
It is perhaps a shame that there wasn't a Peter or Arreola type heavyweigth in his era, because it would have answered a few questions.
Peter and especially Arreola were no Shavers or ****ey. Although they could punch, they are not in the same league
IMO we will never know who would win between ali and tony galento neither[/QUOTE] OK, time out here. Quarry was well on his way to being shot when he fought Norton; and it WAS on short notice. But, with Jerry's (love him) slightly overrated punching power (he usually wore down people in victories and never put a top contender OUT! No Shavers anomalies please) in prime Norton MAY have been able to UD Jerry (my opinion) IMO Kenny would have, quite simply, out worked Ringo and Chuvalo. Lyle was a plodder and again, IMO, I disagree with so many that say Ron walks thru him. A Norton UD over Lyle seems likely to me (or a late stoppage) Ron might land a bomb but any matchup has the old "but so and so might land a bomb" tag attached to it. Jose Luis Garcia? Simply an early Norton who gassed out by mid-fight (Garcia wasn't that big a guy) Throw Shavers & C o o n ey out the door, he was spent by then, especially against C o o n ey. In prime Earnie could have landed the bomb (see above). If you want any validity to my comments you should understand that I always hated Norton. My $0.02
OK, so how much mitigation does Norton get? Against Foreman he gets no mitigation, except of course that fighting Foreman is a mitigating factor. Against Shavers he gets some mitigation, but it is in no way deal changing. He was obviously world class at that point. Against C00ney he gets the strongest mitigation. That old man was not Norton!
Norton froze against big punchers, plain and simple .. Garcia caught him and stopped him ... Garcia was an explosive puncher and a dangerous guy that flamed out too soon .. Foreman destroyed him and Ken was panicked the whole way .. Shavers destroyed him in a minute or so and Frazier was no Foreman in size, youth or skill .. Ken simply got hit and froze .. that was the story on Ken .. big time punchers simply froze hm , hard and decent down he was hell on wheels against .. a very unique fighter in this regard , gave two of the top five greatest heavyweights ever their toughest bouts and got crushed by others ..
Most are missing the point. TECHNICALLY Norton was not prepared to handle aggressive ko punchers. He could not move side to side well so he would find himself with his back against the ropes......bad position to be in vs a ko puncher. This is why Ken should have always been an odds on loser vs Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, ****ey, etc.
While I agree with most folks assessment on Kenny vs. BIG punchers, can we take a step back for a moment? ****ey? Jeez o pete he was fried at that time. Lyle was fried against ****ey, Young was basically gone against Gerry; that's why I bet a half a thousand on Larry and paid all my bills for two months! Much of the Lyle mystique is based on his performance against Foreman. IMO George was, quite simply, brain dead, after Ali despite his talent. Oh, Lyle had him down, what, twice? Does any boxing fan with any degree of 'smart' think that Lyle was going to KO George? My gosh, Ron was almost dead at the end! Put Lyle against Foreman in late 73, 74 and Ron is in a brain dead ******* puddle within 6 minutes......
I disagree that Ken Norton was "fried" against Gerry C00ney. Ken was coming off a win over Tex Cobb. Cobb fought Shavers, Norton and Dokes in back-to back-to back fights. Cobb stopped Shavers. And Norton and Dokes both won close fights over Cobb in similar fashion. Dokes was praised for his performance against Cobb. Norton was bashed for his. Even though the performances were basically the same. Norton wasn't as good as he was in his prime. But Norton was still a top 10 heavyweight. Hell, he'd just beaten one. C00ney just blew him away. That's all. Just like he did to nearly everyone he fought whose names weren't Holmes or Foreman.
it's probably a myth that got started somewhere down the line. You know how it is in boxing; something sounds good then some one goes and repeats it and catches on. It's like today's version of tweets gone viral
