    Folks,

I just finished up reviewing "Norton-Quarry" from '75 a little earlier today.... I love this fight..... Norton was 218 solid pounds of muscle, while Quarry was an okay 207 pounds of determination.... Still, Ken Norton was NOT to be denied.... Norton hammered Jerry Quarry into a bloody 5th round defeat.........:bbb

Okay, okay..... People say Jerry Quarry took that fight with Ken Norton on a week's notice........ WTF happened to Norton's original opponent?? Who was it suppose to be??? I wanna know....:huh

Look, I know Quarry was the heaviest of his career for Norton, and Quarry did have some love handles to a small degree dangling from his hips, too.... But, at 207 pounds, Quarry did NOT appear to be training off his couch at home sucking down beers and eating Dorito's and ripping farts to episodes of "The Rockford Files" in preparation to Norton in '75....:-(

In my book, Norton was simply too good for Quarry........:hey

Style wise, Norton eats Quarry alive any day of the week / year......:deal

    Who says Norton can't punch?

Norton heard some bull**** rumor before the fight that Quarry was spouting off racist garbage, hence being so rough in there.

Wasn't Quarry also half out of it because of painkillers?

Not sure about the painkillers in '75.... But I do know Norton kicked his ass pretty hard.......

This crap about Norton being punchless or feather-fisted is a lot of bullcrap.... Norton could swat pretty good.......

Jerry Quarry had a great chin..... Quarry was never counted out laying on his back or face...... His beard was solid....

I never saw Quarry's lucky comeback win over Lorenzo Zanon....

I forget exactly what kind of substance abuse was going on... But Quarry did have one going on at that time. I think he may of been trying to treat an injury with painkillers, hence being chubby from being unable to work out.

Being sucked dry by all his different wives and girlfriends probably wasn't helping either.

Quarry was Shot. Not only did he show up on a weeks notice at a fat 207lb with a tire around his midsection....he also was a heavy drug addict at this point. He was so shot it wasn't even funny. I like Quarry in his prime to take norton.

Sorry for accidental era. I edited. Quarry is listed in the 4th edition of Boxing Register as top 10 when Norton beat him. Jose Luis Garcia is not.

I seem to remember a fight with Quarry in which he used diuretics or some other drug to lose weight. After he lost, he complained "I left my fight in the toilet."

Don't remember what fight that was, or even if I'm not confusing him with another fighter.

    From another boxing site;

"I remember the Quarry vs Norton fight when it happened. I heard that Norton was suppose to fight Jose Garcia, Norton's first loss early in his career. Garcia pull out of the fight. in step Quarry with only a weeks notice for $500,000. Has anyone else hear that?"

Quarry was still rated around #5 or 6 in the top 10 when Norton fought him. (The edition of the Boxing Register I have shows him with a "10" next to his name as well). However, he was pretty much used up by then. He had looked pretty much spent in the rematch with Frazier, and in fact was already past his peak when he upset Lyle to get back his place in the rankings (which is what made that fight such a big upset in the first place). He turned in a spirited effort against Norton, but it was basically his last hurrah.

I can't remember that myself, but Norton was looking to rematch Garcia at that time, and in fact fought him in his next fight a few months later.

You know what. Your right! I just rechecked. The 4th Edition does have quarry listed in the top 10. Its Jose Luis Garcia who is NOT listed in the top 10 when Norton beat him. My fault. let me edit.

Hector Camacho said something similar to that remark after he was soundly beaten by Chavez in 1992 at 140 drained pounds........

No ****in' way Quarry got 500k for the '75 fight with Norton...... Not without HBO or PPV....... HBO & PPV was around in the '70s, but not the normal routine.... In 1975, I'd suspect Jerry Quarry took an offer of no more than 80k to 100k on that split moment in time... Christ, Ol' Norton prolly only got roughly 200k at best.......

Camacho and his ego obviously saw him using dieurtrics and steroids. He had the most obvious steroid build I've ever seen against Leonard. :think

By the 1990s, the JUICE was in...........:patsch

But back in 1975, I'd swear Ken Norton was a serious juicing weight lifter... However, when asked in the early 1990s about the question of his 70s training routine, Norton claimed he never thought of Juice and didn't really lift serious weights back then, either....... Norton was just blessed with a rock hard body by doing regular boxing and physical excercises....

Norton had some great skills. Quarry was an " off and on " type of fighter, and although he was older this was an " on " night for Quarry. The result was a good fight.

Quarry did land some, and Norton took it well. You guys should see Norton vs Stander sometime. Now that I think if it, Norton did better vs Stander and Quarry in comparison to Joe Frazier.
