"Norton vs. Quarry" 1975..

    A good point. Fortunately Jerry had the chin to hang with virtually anyone.
    However I still regard the Shavers fight as some sort of an anomaly (sp?) Despite Earnie's number of fights, Jerry was the 1st "big-timer" he faced (I know, Ellis but that fight too had a strange ending, much like Jerry-Earnie)
    Lyle? Yes, but Ron didn't have that upper level sandman power that could put Jerry away.
    I guess my answer is...he never really faced any lights out punisher except for Joe. But I still think that Foreman would have nailed him big time and forced stoppage, perhaps cutting him badly if not pounding him out.
    I'm not anti-Quarry, he was a hero of mine.
    After thinking about it, I just see a prime Norton, prime Quarry as a really good scrap.
    And perhaps not as pronounced as Chuvalo, Jerry's KO % was padded a tad with blowouts of non-contenders.

    I'm 55 and a Patterson nut-hugger, I followed Jerry's career ever since I picked up the newspaper in June of 67 and saw that my hero fought a draw with Jerry Quarry??? Who??? :D

    I thought Frazier did better against Quarry in the second fight, he actually managed to put Quarry down a couple of times which Norton couldn't do a year later.

    The difference is fairly marginal anyway, as both Frazier and Norton beat both those guys very decisively, and beat the **** out of them. Norton also had the extra benefit of fighting those guys after Frazier had been through with them.

    Hmmmm.... You know, if Ol' Shavers had parked Quarry in late '73, would we've seen "Shavers-Frazier" in the summer of '74???

    I think we would've.... Don King was handling Shavers at the time and he desperately wanted to break into the big time.... King was prepared to feed Shavers to the wolves in 1973..... But, Don King never thought that Quarry would ice his boy in New York......

    Styles makes fights.... Shavers was iced by Quarry's right hand..... Had that been Frazier in there, Shavers would've been watching for left-hooks........

    I know.... EVERYBODY here will claim that Frazier would've iced Shavers in 1974..... Most will say Shavers had no chance at all to beat Frazier..... I'm not so sure about that...

    I'd love somebody to send me a clean / doable copy of "Norton vs. Texas Cobb" from '80.... I never saw it........

    I have a clean copy of "Shavers-Quarry" on file already.......... Quarry caught Shavers cold.......... Shavers never recovered........ The refs stoppage was warranted....

    I thought it was Oscar Bonavena who was supposed to fight Norton, but was replaced by Quarry.

    I think Norton had good punching power. Not up there with Foreman or anything but on the level of a Tim Witherspoon.

    I think the card was originally George Foreman vs. Oscar Bonavena, then Norton replaced Foreman, then Quarry replaced Bonavena.

    I feel that Norton would still have beaten Quarry,prime for prime. Obviously it would have been more competitive.
