Quarry was admittedly toast by then and he made Norton look good. Styles may have made it a tougher fight if we wound the clock back for Jerry. Jerry was not really a pressure fighter but had power and a solid chin. His reflexes slowed down and he admitted to doing drugs and booze during this point in time. Prime vs Prime I like Jerry because of his power but Jerry was more of a body punch head punch guy not a pressure fighter but a decent banger. Norton had some speed which would trouble Jerry but not sure Norton could have take Jerry's power. This version of Jerry was like the Ali version of Holmes
I remember seeing Quarry's comeback fight against Zanon, and wish I had n't. Until the ko punch,Jerry looked atrocious.
Agreed. Look at the version of Quarry that fought Frazier in 1969 and this version...simply no comparison. The '69-'70 version of Quarry would beat Norton.
A much younger Quarry might have very well pulled it off against Norton, but I wouldn't bet money on the outcome one way or the other.. For all of his short cummings, to beat Norton you either had to be an all time great boxer like an Ali or Holmes, or a world class puncher like a Shavers or Foreman... Quarry was neither.. Jerry's best chance would be to get after him early and try to overwhelm Norton like he did against Shavers, but if Ken survives, I don't think Jerry is dominated the action... Ken might not have been a big hitter, but he certainly could wear a man down through constant pressure, and wasn't exactly feather fisted either... Jerry's tendency to cut and bleed, while struggling with guys who crowded him, might prove to be his undoing...
Jerry Quarry's main problem was he was really a Cruiserweight before we actually had a regulated division... I think Quarry had a great chin and a murderous punch----for a dude 190 to 200 pounds max........ But Quarry owned wet toilet tissue for facial skin...... That was his main problem right there besides fighting "A" heavyweights of a Golden Era of heavyweight boxing....... MR.BILL
If MRBILL is right about Quarry being a cruiserweight even by 70's standards would it be correct to assume that Marciano was also a CW who would be too small to compete in Quarry's era as well? I'm a Marciano fan but it does make one think doesn't it?
I love Marciano as much as anyone from Brockton, but I've said for yrs that "The Rock" would've been in deep **** had he been in his peak days and nights from 1966 thru 1973..... I just don't see Marciano doing well in the ring with some of them Monsters of the Golden Era of heavyweight boxing....... THE TRUTH! MR.BILL
Neither did I. I loved what Ken said about Tex coming to the hotel to try to fight him to get his money, and him having to call the cops.
Fight got made on 3/6/1975 went down 3/24/75 That's 18 days. http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AAIBAJ&pg=2788,3235318&dq=quarry+norton&hl=en
Guys, Quarry was simply done in 75. He was near shot. A prime Jerry is at least pick em with a prime Norton. They used to spar in the gym and former fighter and top ref Ron Lipton says he saw Quarry KO him in the gym and own him. Norton was definately a very good puncher. Not Shavers/Foreman/Tua/Lewis but the way above Ali and Holmes.
For a guy who was reported to be drinking beer and eating Dorito's while burping and ripping farts off the sofa to "Sanford and Son" back in the spring of 1975, I thought Jerry Quarry looked pretty good physically at 207 pounds for Kenny Norton at The Garden in New York....... But yes, he had some loose flesh dangling off his lower back come fight night..... Still, J.Q. was NOT pathetic......... He was game.......... Of course Norton looked like a marble statue that was hand chisled at 218 RIPPED pounds of muscle mass........ MR.BILL
Quarry certainly wasn't on his best night against Norton. I think that Quarry's hand speed and counter punching ability would beat Norton. Norton often failed against numerous punchers like Foreman, Cooney, and shavers (who quarry DESTROYED in one round!!atsch) I like quarry's chin, hand speed, skills, and punching power vs Norton's power and conditioning. I would definitely favor quarry... Norton never could take a decent punch hahah with all that muscle he must punch decent though and i do think he had a powerful overhand. Look at 3:04. He nailed Duane with that overhand. Looked pretty powerful to me. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RICD8ojVQbE[/ame]
Off topic............... Poor Ol' Bobick had some of the WORST defense that I had ever seen....................... NONE! Dude's like "Norton and Tate" never missed a shot on Bobick's head and jaw........ MR.BILL
