I think we're finally seeing what many of us knew for a long time. The Cubans were only good at amateuer boxing, and only because they trained for the amateur system because that's all they fought in year after year, never turning pro.

It's ironic that if none of these Cubans ever went pro, many would be talking how they would be dominating professional boxing just because of their amateuer "careers". Heck, Gamboa and Solis would be pound for pound the best fighters on the planet had they never defected! :D

Likewise, that's why Felix Savon and Tefolio Stevenson would have gotten KTFO if they ever went pro. 12-15 rounds and an exposed chin is often a rude wake up for fighters that love to hide behind amateur headgear.

Yep, and there are 40 million in MY country, the good old United States, and we've done better than the Ukraine.

Poor comparison, comparing a third world country like the Ukraine and its inferior sporting infrastructure to that of the United states is stupid. Americans have a lot to work with, Ukrainians have little, despite this Ukrainians have done well in pro boxing despite being socioeconomically handicapped. If the Ukrainians had the resources the United states has, they would be doing even better at pro boxing.

Well that's exactly what I'm saying about Cuba, Old Sport! They are even MUCH POORER than the Ukraine That plus any Cuban boxer who comes here is 28 or 30 and is walking away from his family FOREVER!

Per capita income:

Ukraine/GNI per capita
8,190 PPP dollars (2016)

Cuba/GDP per capita
7,602.26 USD (2015)

Now keep in mind this is highly misleading as the average cuban makes about $50 a week.

But it's good that someone is finally getting it.

And actually the comparison between the US and the Ukraine is not even that far off because the Ukraine, like all ex-Soviet countries has government-run sporting academies in which the most athletic kids are selected very young, given training, nutrition, (legal and not) coaching and administration to get him to the best he can be. American kids and their parents get no governmental help and have to figure it out on their own.

Thats not how things work you idiot. They are NOT forced to become boxers or athletes, they themselves CHOOSE what they want to be.

Even during the times of the Soviet Union people werent forced to become athletes, they chose that path.

Even the infrastructure The Ukrainian government provides for its boxers is inferior to that of the United States. Not to mention Ukrainian children arent raised in proficient environments, their bodies dont reach their physical potential because of the crappy environments.

I think the same of them. Both Cubans and Ukrainians dont reach their physical potentials due to poor socioeconomics. This includes all countries not properly represented in sports or boxing.

Usyk and Shabbransky look pretty healthy to me.

Ukraine has benefited from the Soviet Union's emphasis on physical education, and Ukraine was left with hundreds of stadiums, swimming pools, gymnasiums, and other athletic facilities after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Sports education
See also: Sports school
Aside from sports curriculum in regular schools, Ukraine inherited from the Soviet Union an extensive network of youth sports schools, including specialized schools of the Olympic reserve, and school of sports mastery. As of 2011 there were some 1483 sports schools, 189 specialized [sports] schools of Olympic reserve, and 34 school of higher sports mastery.[5]

There are also two sports universities the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine (Kiev), Lviv State University of Physical Culture and Kharkiv State Academy of Physical Culture. Beside that in Ukraine located 9 colleges of physical education, 3 schools of Olympic reserve and 6 sports boarding schools.

Im talking on average and FULL potential. Many Ukrainians would no doubt be better off with the wealthy sporting establishment the United States has. Of course the cultural and economic environment contributes to the success of its athletes.

Ukranians and Russians would be better off in the cultural and sporting environment of RICH Americans like Matthew Stafford, Johnny Manziel and Shaq's kids. Athletic Ukranian kids have a Much better chance than the %95 of Americans who are from the lower and middle class. If you plucked from an athletic test at age 9 and put into a gladiator school for 15 years, you are going to be better prepared for a boxing career than a broke 21 year old basketball of football player who wanders into a gym. But we still do OK.

Nah, the United States has a superior sporting infrastructure, many more boxing gyms than the Ukrainians, more wealthy resource outlets for their athletes and better trainers. Not to mention having the benefit of living in the Mecha of boxing where Americans are A side Divas.

In contrast to Ukrainians that work with little, an average Ukrainian child has very little in terms of opportunity than your average American. They are not PRIVILEGED like Americans are.

There is no use in even comparing, a third world country against a first world global hegemon. Of course the United States has all the advantages. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that.

Ukraine population - 45M
USA population - 323M...

Do the math and consider boxing is barely a top 10 sport in America while its one of Ukraines biggest sports after Football and Basketball.

Ukrainians didn't rank in the top 20 list of foreign nationalities who participate in the NBA despite basketball being a national institution. Germany , Nigeria , PR , Brazil , Turkey are just a few countries who produced more foreign players to the NBA.

Just been chatting to a Nicaraguan friend of mine and he tells me that in the Spanish speaking world they refer to Cuba as ''Isla De Cristal'' which translates into English as Glass Island.

This is the official Cuban Glass video.
