Just so there is NO backtracking. Everyone agrees that Kessler is NOT Lacy and not a hypejob right? If he loses, I don't want to see any backtracking and saying he was a hypejob. If he wins, I don't want to see anyone claiming Calzaghe was exposed by losing to a bum. I don't care who wins....just want to get this out of the way now.
For me Kessler is the 3rd best fighter from the 160-175 crop, so that's obviously not a hype job. I do think people are foolish to think he is going to defeat Calzaghe though, but that's different. Hatton's not a hype job, it's a great notch for Floyd and there is little chance that Hatton wins, same with this one, only this one is in Calzaghe's weight class, not jumping up to a weight class where the guy had significant troubles.
Lacy was a tough aggressive guy that beat some decent opposition in exciting fashion, I think he earned hype as an exciting fighter but some interpreted that as him being a great fight, he was just good, not great. Kessler, I think is great or at least will be remembered as such as his career progresses.
I never thought Lacy was a hype job either. A very good fighter who matched up very poorly style wise to his opponent. I never understood why everyone just wrote him off. Its happened so many times before in boxing, with the most memorable being Mosley v Forrest or MAB v Pac. If anything it highlights when a fighter is too one dimensional, and lacks the ability to change their gameplan.
Certainly Kessler is not a hype job - he's proven he belongs. But this doesn't mean I don't think that Calzaghe is gonna win an easier than expected decision, or maybe even TKO him late.
I am of the thought that Kessler is a pretty good fighter who is to some extent overrated, particularly on these boards. I don't think beating Kessler would make any fighter "great" by itself, although Joe already has several solid wins on his ledger which as a whole may see him end up in Canastota one day. Also Calzaghe is getting up there in years, so if he beats Kessler in November it may be seen in a better light that if he beat him prime-for-prime, and deservedly so. Overall I believe Kessler has been overhyped to some extent, but he is not a Lacy-esque hypejob, and is not tailor-made for Joe stylewise...he has a very good right hand and is quick for somebody his size, which should cause Joe some trouble. There are of course things Calzaghe should be able to exploit, whether he manages to pull it off is another story. If he does, he deserves his just due for the win.
I think Lacy was overhyped to some degree by a section of his fans. It was clear pretty early that he had limitations that some people werent willing to acknowledge. But on the other side of the coin people were very, very quick to write him off. I found myself pre-Calzaghe getting into arguements about how Lacy had his limits but post-Calzaghe I was defending him against guys who totally wrote him off as a worthless fighter. JC is a really special fighter and Jeff Lacy is more or less above average, that was the difference that night. Fact is Lacy is a very good fighter, a very fun fighter to watch but also the enjoyment we get out watching him has a lot to do with his flaws and limitations. And I picked him to beat Calzaghe I might add. Kessler might be also be a hypejob but for different reasons. I dont expect him to be blown out by Joe like Lacy was but Id be a fool to pick against Joe again.
He has his flaws, but I think he is still a top fighter. Definitely not a hype job. That indicates to me a fighter who just crashed and burned and never achieved anything at the first real step up. Like Michael Grant or Audley Harrison. Lacy had some good solid wins under his belt, some in very impressive fashion. He was no hype job, although I do agree some people were over rating him to a degree. I think against Sheika in particular, and even in the early rounds against Vanderpool Lacy showed he could be beaten with speed. This is exactly what Joe did. I still believe that Lacy could work on his game and come back. When he threw in combinations he was brutal, much like Mike Tyson. Also like Tyson, when he got lazy and over confident, and threw one punch at a time he looke VERY one dimensional. If Lacy can go back and re vamp his style based around combination punching and utilising better head movement I think he could still be a dominate force in the division after the era of JC.
I absolutely agree with you. Lacy lost to a p4p Top fighter and the best Supermiddleweight of the last decade and now everyone writes him off. Bad for Lacy that he got injured against Tsypko, if not he would have knocked him out any maybe back in the mix. He boxed well in this fight, even with the injury you have to apreciate his performance. I hope he comes back soon.
NO HYPE!!! This is the fight between the top two established SMW's out. If Calzaghe beats Kessler like he beat Lacy?? It just show's his greatness not the "hype" of the other man. Lacy isnt as Bad a fighter as JC made him look, though in today's "culture" it seems the thing to do is diss the loser.
