Why? Because Ortiz wasn't fighting like an old man. He was fighting an extremely smart fighting and countering Wilder. What impressed me so much is Wilder has insane power and an ability to break a good defense. He was more accurate than Ortiz and was able to break his guard. That was a good performance, I believe Wilder would KO guys like Povetkin and I think the Joshua fight is a 40/60 fight in favor of Joshua.
Respect to Wilder beating his first top 10 opponent as champ. Good timing though Ortiz has been very inactive and needed heart pills. Don't get all gassed up boombsquad. This is not some ATG accomplishment, this was Wilder's first serious contender defense. With all due respect, Ortiz is the Cuban Bootleg version of 48 year old Foreman.
Lol the 48 year old Foreman was better, could take a better punch and didn't get tired after 5 rounds.
He beat a sick old man and was the fav coming in. Whats so impressive? LMAO https://www.*******.com/luis-ortiz-high-blood-pressure-concerned-nysac-today--125869 If you want to see impressive, see what Bivol did to Barrera last night in his 13th fight.
lol no. Wlad 10 years heavyweight king pin 41. Ortiz, top 5 heavyweight challenger for past few years.
Straw man. I didn't say Ortiz was better than Wlad. Wlad was beaten before, dethroned & coming off a 2 year layoff. Aj was a hot prospect with all the physical advantages and competitive boxing acumen. Ortiz was undefeated, a thoroughbred amateur and a technically sound professional with momentum. Wlider lacks some basic fundamentals, he's almost a shocking overachiever tbh. I'd bet the vast majority of Wilder's opponents have the technical boxing advantage. I thought eventually technical boxing would overcome raw power but Wilder needs one right hand and nothing is ever the same
The only thing impressive was Wilder's grit to not go down in round 7. Wilder was the favorite, was outboxed and basically waited for the old man to tire. If anything Ortiz impressed me by fact his reflexes were still sharp, and his game plan to not get caught going in was good. If the judges had been fair he was 3 rounds from taking Wilder's crown. Not bad when in your opponents back yard and you're fighting Father Time as well as Wilder. The division is lean right now but Wilder is so flawed someone will beat him sooner rather than later and probably someone we don't expect
It was impressive. We already knew he had power but he showed that he can keep cool under pressure and in the face of adversity. There were also aspects of Wilders game that were reinforced that are troubling. He isn’t very skilled from a Boxing perspective, he has a lot of holes in his defense and his technique needs refining but he actually has some ring IQ. I truly believe he lost more rounds to Ortiz last night by being outboxed. But he had a game plan that he stuck to. He was waiting to catch Ortiz with the power right coming in and he accomplished that. Wilder definitely is athletic and fast for at heavyweight. Those are massive attributes that help him land that power.
Yep hell of a fight, and I'm growing to like Wilder more and more . Chin stupid up to big shots, he was out on his feet but able to keep it all together. He was losing rounds, but was trying to time that big right all night, and always finds a home down the stretch. It's refreshing to have a heavyweight knockout artists that seems honestly willing to fight everybody.
He's still pretty poor overall for me...the wrong opponent will expose it. Ortiz was almost there last night he was the right standard of opponent to do it but with the wrong style/reach for the job. luckily for wilder he,s got the power. Tactically they got it spot on last night...but the days of seeing skill in boxing is dying. Ortiz is a very skilled fighter...but they,ve basically found tactics to beat it as opposed to being anywhere as skillful. You,ve got one guy trying to make a fight of it...and the other guy just staying out of range waiting to counter. All wilder had was the straight right hand. No thinking behind his boxing. Just a simple i ll stay out of range make him come in on me when he does I,ll fire the straight right. Wilders problems will come ten fold when a good opponent doesn't need to come to him. Tactics won him the fight but they tactics also reveal how limited he actually is as a boxer. Good win tho.
