Not Calzaghe bashing - But why do so many people think he's rubbish?

    Thoughts please guys?

I just think that yes the guy had talent, speed, stamina etc.. BUT i think that he fought a very very weak bunch of opponents. His greatest win was against kessler and I take my hat off to him for that but Lacey was rubbish and proved nothing before Joe tore him a new arsehole, the Hopkins fight I scored as a loss for him and Jones was so shot it was just pointless.
I dont think he ducked many people except Jones and Hopkins(most probably frank warrens doing) but i just think he came up in a pool of very weak fighters. Also - after the hopkins fight he became really kinda cocky and it was never his style, saying things like he was a legend and people should respect it. Joe was always average Joe and we loved him for it..

Thats my opinion lads - over to you lot..

    I agree 100%

Also Joe isn't that brave, he didn't take many risks.

Well, you see, the ******* had the nerve to be undefeated in his career and win two lineal titles and defend his belt around 20 times. ****ing sonofabitch, how dare he be considered a great fighter.

Especially when Roy Jones, in his prime, admitted to ducking him.

One word, one explanation: Frank Warren. The enemy of good match ups.

I'm still a bit curious about one thing - he only fought in front of a (mostly) hostile crowd twice - and one was his awful performance against Robin Reid.

I wonder how it would have gone if he had fought Kessler in Copenhagen? Even in Wales he nearly got KTFO three times and edged the fight by 2-4 rounds (depending on which side of the Atlantic you're from) and got encouraged by the crowd in the later rounds.

Before Lacy, Calzaghe's career is similiar to Erdei's right now.

Calzaghe found it easier to hide onor world title than travel to find Jones.

Jones would have been slagged of for handpicking Joe at the time who was an absolute nobody at the time...

Joe also said he used to be plane sick ...which was the reason why he didnt travel to US earlier..

forget Jones....why didnt he fight the other Champions???Tarver? Johnson? Reggie Johnson? Virgill Hill ??? Montell Griffin?

he could have made astatement at Light Heavy?

Remember Joe used to say he was tight at the weight at supermiddle?....

like I said its easy to hind behind a title(minor) when you are fighting fodder and hype jobs(kessler Lacy)

    ROFL

hes pulled of one of the great Con tricks of the modern era.

but I will say something...i find it asham because Calzaghe is an brilliant fighter.

I remember Roy Jones Jr. admitting back in the day that, excepting himself, Joe was the most talented, dangerous fighter out there. He didn't want to risk fighting him overseas after his terrible experience at the olympics. He said this in an interview and I remember admiring the guy's honesty. About a year ago Floyd Mayweather Jr. talked about Joe's boxing prowess and felt he rivaled himself in pure boxing talent and suggested that their pure talent and speed explained a lot of the hate directed at them. To this day both long term prizefighters look unmarked. Noone would guess they were boxers. Finally, both Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard who rarely agree on anything both have talked of Joe's skill and greatness. Probably his skin pigmentation and his being from Wales has much to do with people underating him. If he were an American who had achieved the phenomenol record of Joe Calzaghe he would be rightfully considered an ATG.

Explain how he ducked Hopkins? Somekind of mind control trick to force Hopkins to not sign the contract perhaps....?:think

I agree with that - BUT the competition he faced in doing so really wasnt the best that was out there.. Look what im saying is that I think Joe ruined his legacy by NOT fighting outside of the UK for the vast majority of his career and sticking with Frank Warren who cherry picked opponents for him.

Every fighter her gets in the ring is brave and wouldnt through choice duck people - they fight cos they love it. BUT i would have respected Joe a million times more if he had told frank to **** off 8 years back and gone his own way - to the states and fought all comers.

Im from the UK and i'll tell you now - Ricky Hatton gets WAY more respect than Calzaghe because he split with Warren and did his own thing.

I think Calzaghe - through ignorance maybe, let Warren guide him through streams of rubbish opposition, fighting in the UK. And I think thats why Calzaghe now comes accoss as desperate for people to accept him as a legend because he knows deep down that he could have been way better than he is. With his skill, heart, speed etc.. I think he would get alot more respect if he came forward and told it how it is. Said "look i know i didnt fight the best people out there but I defended my title, am undefeated and I hope I've got the respect and the love of my fans.. Anything extra is a bonus" BUt trying to convince people he fought everyone and should be regarded as a legend makes people dislike him..
