Not enough fighters pressure from behind the jab. I watch as many telecast as i can on a weekly basis and it never ceases to amaze me how many fighters apply pressure but neglect the jab when doing it, Teddy Atlas always mentions it, the only few i can recall of recent times, is Tamara against Viloria, Cotto against Foreman, i think its a neglected way of fighting. Wlad uses the jab and comes foward but he does not really pressure, but more dominates centre ring looking to pull back and counter off the front foot.
you mean like a prime mike tyson...watch tucker fight. or like a prime liston..watch eddie machen fight
Yes this is a good approach, and one that many many boxers use. But ultimately boxing is a little more complicated than that. Have you ever fought anyone that comes wading in time after time behind a jab without altering this approach? You can pick them off with ease. You need far more strings to your bow to make this an effective strategy.
I know, but the key is, if the fighter is a smart fighter, is to cut the ring down as you do it and not! come in straight, thats the key right there, anyone can hit you with a left hook and pivot off if you keep coming in straight, its your use of the jab, to cut the ring down and throw it when there on the turn. It does take a smart fighter to do i effectively though, i agree with that.
Khan was impressive with the jab last time out...he did a mixture of keeping the centre of the ring, and as the bout progressed he started punishing Malignaggi with it. If he can begin to use it on the back foot to keep his opponents away (possibly Maidana)...it could be become a major weapon in his arsenal.
it's because pressuring behind the jab is an outdated technique. today's super fighters don't need to do that kind of stuff, they're just too good to be bothered. same reason they never feint, infight or spin/walk their opponents in clinches. outdated technique has no place in the land of unarmed martial arts hand fighting masters of today.
