Not enough recovery time for Manny

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by LordSharpshire, Dec 9, 2009.

  1. March is too soon IMHO. Manny has been on a whirlwind lately and it seems the man has had very little rest. It is much to ask of him to be ready for his biggest challenge after a tough fight against Cotto. I just think it plays into Floyd's favor that Manny hasn't had much rest. In retrospect, do you think it was a mistake for Roach and Co. to suggest the March 13th date? Should they have allowed for more time?

Add to that Roach wants Manny to start camp around early January to work on strategy and a good gameplan around a 10 week training camp.

There's 2 schools of thought...one's that it's too soon , as you stated. The other is that Manny was extremely sharp vs Cotto and the shorter layoff might make that easier to maintain.

Personally, I'd have liked to see Manny have another month before the fight to rest and ensure he was 100% ready for a full camp for Mayweather, but Floyd will still get full credit from me should he win. Why? Because even a 95% Pacquiao is a hell of a fighter. Still, there's no guarantee yet he won't be 100% even with the relatively early date. Just that there's a small window there in case there's a setback in Pac's recovery and preparation.

Although i do remember after the second JMM fight which was a tough fight for Pacquiao and him fighting just 3 months after against Diaz i thought the exact same thing that it was too soon after the JMM fight.

Of course Mayweather is a completely different animal than Diaz so i dont know.

I think it's a good thing. He'll be extremely sharp. 4 months between fights is plenty really, he didn't get beat up that bad in the Cotto fight.

I don't know if there's one right answer here. Fighters used to fight so much more frequently and still had great fights. But Manny did get banged up pretty good by Cotto. Blood-swollen ear, busted ear drum, bruised under both eyes, etc. And I know the body has to give out at some point.

 Get lost. Fighters used to fight a brawl from one weekend to the next and all of a sudden 4 months isn't enough time in between fights?! :verysad

I could list tons of great fighters that have done the same thing.... this is nothing new.

Pac has had pretty easy affairs inside the ring as of late, Diaz, Hatton, Oscar.... the Cotto fight was his toughest in awhile, but he hardly took a sever beating. He is primed and ultimately will produce a pac that never had the chance to get that out of shape, with no rust, and they will be able to have a running start almost on training.

people constantly complain that fighters dont fight enough, what is this... 4 months in between fights? that averages to 3 fights a year.... that is the minimum i would want a fighter like pac to be fighting a year, especially when he hasnt been absorbing too much punishment all things considered.

He is fine.... the amount of time is fine as well.

Who do you think wins, Kirk? Floyd or Pacquiao?

  11. Just preparing for Floyd mentally has got to be exhausting let alone the media circus that is surrounding this fight. I'm not saying it's a picnic for Floyd either, but Manny definitely has more people pulling at him in so many aspects of his life. I just think it's a lot to ask of a guy in such a short time frame. And, contrary to popular belief, Manny, nor any other fighter is a machine. The human body is a biological organism and it needs its rest.

  12. Yeah, I'm not buying that second school of thought. A few more months would do him good. The idea that he would be 'less sharp' in June or September doesn't jive with me. He would be fine, and fully rested.

  13. Diaz isn't even CLOSE to Floyd's level.

  14. This is 2009, not 1959. And, these guys aren't fighting for milk money these days.
