He's the best heavyweight in the world til proven otherwise. We can sit here and talk about the Sanders fight and the Brewster fight and all that nonsense but the truth is that he's at the top of the heap right now Ring belt or not. I made a point in another thread though and this is not criticism of Wlad. You're either A: really patriotic or B: stupid to not admit that the heavyweight division is property of the Eastern Bloc fighters so with that being said... I want to see Wlad fight some of those guys. Valuev, Chagaev, Lyhakovich, Povetkin, Dimitrenko, Ibragimov (win or lose saturday), etc. These guys are the real world class heavyweights. America no longer holds the monopoly on them so I really wanna see what Wlad's got in him when he faces these well-schooled fighters. Am I wrong for feeling this way?
nah your correct. america has the talent, it's just there are a lot of unmotivated, unfit fighters out there. currently the fitter, hungrier fighters who also have extensive amature backgrounds are from the Bloc. but like anything in life there are cycles. it would not surprise me one day if china and india produce a great heavyweight champ, and when that happens, it will inspire more youths in those countries to take up boxing which will in turn produce more top level chinese and indian fighters. i like this as it makes boxing a truly world wide sport. and in turn create more fans and that in turn keeps the great sport alive and well. i just wish one day australia could produce a heavyweight champ :verysad
haha yeah but meehan is from new zealand. and also paul briggs was born in new zealand as well. of course if you know australia you will also know we have a tendancy to "adopt" talent from new zealand for example russel crowe the aussie actor was also born in new zealand but because he is famous etc. he is automatically an aussie. pretty funny considering the australian population is much bigger than the new zealand pop, yet they seem to be producing all the fighters! atsch i never saw the meehan - brewster fight. heard it was a crackin' fight and close the whole way.
Yeah I know about Meehan and Briggs being from NZ which surprises me when they're billed from Australia. Crowe too. The Brewster/Meehan fight was close and some people will tell u that it could have gone either way while more objective people will tell u that Meehan should have won. Meehan absolutely hammered Brewster on the ropes in the 8th round hitting him with some brutal punches (nasty uppercut in there) en route to a 10-8 round. So even if u had the fight even in rounds Meehan would be a winner by a point. Brewster dug deep to win some late rounds and apparently that was what did it for him but Meehan really should have gotten the nod. I scored it 115-112 for Kali. He gave a very good account of himself that night.
boshter bill? i'll have to look that up cause i've honestly never heard of that fella reggie. as for the meehan/brewster match it sounded like a war. i did hear they brewsters jaw was broken in the 8th so that explains the big kali round. will hunt down a copy and watch it. as for fighters being billed as aussies i guess the theory goes, australia and new zealand are not that well known or big in the boxing scene, world wide, therefore if a new zealand born fighter makes australia his home, they are simply called aussies to make it quick and simple for the announcer since no body gives a rats about our figthers chances . rather than how they do the russians like maskaev "oleg maskaev, fighting out of us of a, by way of khakistan". also about meehan, he gave it his all in the brewster match, but then apparently from what i read it seems like he fought really scared against rahman. rahman was a beast in that fight from what i gather. i did see the ko in that fight however. rahman really clubbed the snot out of meehan. oh and as for your list of russian fighters for wlad to fight i too as a wlad fan would be immensely curious to see how he fights the giant valuev. i wonder if wlad would throw lots of body shots in that one? but as for dimentrenko i feel he will end up being one of the "protected species". i dunno why i think this. but i feel his promoter will shelter that kid bigtime. also if sultan loses to this version of holyfield he should retire. holyfield is a legend, plain and simple. but father time catches everyone, and therefore i expect a win for sultan based simply on extreme age difference and all that comes with it. holyfield is a shell of his former self. seriously ibragimov should retire immediately if he lost to holyfield. chagaev reminds me of sam peter but one who trains more, has more skills, but probably less power and chin. i think chagaev could give wladimir problems if he gets inside and brawls. povetkin to me doesn't seem like he has the power to make wlad nervous. and serguei will be 40 before he decides to arrange another fight!
The trouble with Australia is that boxing is so far down the list in terms of popular sports here. Honestly the only time there was a little media coverage was the Green Mundine fight but I hear nothing about boxing anymore.
yep. and having next to zero coverage here means small fanbase. thank god for sopcast and bittorrent boxing sites, cause otherwise i'd only see the occassional PPV fights and zero up and coming fightersatsch i find it highly amusing how foxtel (the only big cable tv network in Oz), puts up the random PPV event, and expects people to buy them.... i mean, why the hell should a consumer buy a fight card if they have never seen the fighters involved before? hopefully one day foxtel strikes a deal with HBO, Showtime and Sky Sports when it comes to regular shows. im not that upset atm as i use sopcast and bittorrent sites to get the fights but if given a choice i'd rather pay a monthly fee to get channels like our mates in america and the uk get. maybe the new growing IPTV will allow aussies to buy live boxing cards.
Holyfield should be on that list if the unthinkable happens on saturday. Otherwise, I think you´re right. Wlads dominance isn´t his fault.....
This about sums it up. I do think the winner of Ibragimov vs Holyfield is willing to fight Wlad in a title unification match. Povetkin is set to face Chirs Byrd. I expect Povetkin to thras Byrd. If this happens, look for Povetkin be in Ring Magazine's top ten, and X-Soveit fighters to catpure at least 8 of the top 10 spots. Possibly 9.
