I know this is only reiterating what's being played out in the other threads, but I thought a terse expression might impress the absurdity of this situation:

Mayweather rejects the most lucrative fight in boxing history and lets it die with a whimper. Pacquiao proceeds to fight a disgraced fighter in Mexico or rematch someone he already battered severely and knocked out.

That's where we're at now. This is what the sport of boxing is to casual fans and the mainstream media. I'm sure this situation is dynamic, but I have no idea what is coming from Mayweather's team at this point. Something has to happen.

Well, it wouldn't be a problem if people cared more about the sport than they do individual boxers.

Mayweather is disgraced as a coward and manny is on roids.

Neither one of those 'facts' is backed by anything but feverish speculation by rabid fans, but it spreads, and it hurts the sport.

Part of the problem is that these are the only two fighters that really matter to mainstream America anymore. I'll admit that I'm worried about what will happen once they're gone. Boxing is amazingly resilient, but I'm not sure who's going to step in as of now. You generally don't know until it begins to happen.

I think it's good to have some factions and fans who support one fighter more than others. While one would like to balance that with a general appreciation for the sport, the zeal keeps things interesting. I'll concede, though, that the *****/******* thing has become tired at this point. That's simply because it's been so salient for several months with no clear indication that resolution is on the horizon.

Either way, when the two biggest stars in the sport are perceived as doing this, it's horrible for boxing.
