Look at world class natural talents like Joe Calzaghe Scott Harrison Prince Naz Lennox Lewis eg they breezed through British level at ease. Ricky never came remotely close that's why he struggled at British level until he teamed up with you. If he was a super talent he hid it in his performances v Johannason and AAA. As I said I take my hat of to him as with amazing determination n and work ethic he won world titles.

 

Fair enough Ryan, I can say I never seen world champion talent with him in his early fights hence why he was falling short at British level.

 

Don't forget he was very young when he lost those fights, one to future world champ Alex Arthur, the other to Carl Johanesson. " 2 quality fighters and he gave them both a good fight and showed a lot of heart.

Yes he didn't look like he was gonna be a world champ early on, but sometimes it works the other way round and fighters improve or get the best out themselves when the opposition is higher to show their true potential.

Amir Khan was getting knocked down by every tom dick and harry at commonwealth title level, and he was at world title level as well lol but he did win a world title.

Jamie Mcdonnell had 2 losses at domestic level too.

With the fullest of respect Ricky was trained by his amateur coach for CJ AND AA and wasn't boxing to his strengths or in a manner that would win titles
Ricky has huge talent and ive told you before he had more talent than Scott for example who relied heavily on his superior strength over opponents

 

How close did Burns v Broner come to happening? and no disrespect is it true you wanted to avoid that fight?

 

To be fair billy I don't think anyone can argue out of all the British world champions of the past 10-20 years he's probably the one who's got the most out of his 'natural abilities'

Lost his first 3 pro fights, went 6-5 in his first 11 fights... ended up going undefeated for the last 10 years of his career making numerous world title defenses?

Wasn't the most naturally talented guy (or the most exciting...), but worked his backside off to achieve what he did.

 

Yeah good shout on johnny Nelson, got his book in large part because I want to know how he came back from that horrendous start like! But it's still a pretty short list where he's high up on (should have also added that im only counting those who were world champ for more than a handful of fights, not someone who lost their title in their first or second defence)

 

I was at the Burns v Crawford fight and believe me it was the most boring fight I have seen since Danny Williams v Fraudley 1 at the Excel Arena. :deal

 

Scott relied a lot on strength later on Billy, but at British level Scott used his boxing skills that helped make him the first Brit to ever win a medal at the World Amateurs to beat opponents. Back then people thought he would maybe struggle at world level as he wasn't strong enough/hit hard enough did they not? The power never came till later on. Scott was beating former world champions when in early 20s including one in his own back garden in the Garden itself. That's world class natural talent. As I said I take my hat of to Ricky who had talent, but all I can say on what I seen in his early career I never once seen world championship natural talent

 

that's what you get for paying to watch an american in a main event in boxing....

 

Johannson was a good British level fighter, AAA was European/Fringe world level at best. If AAA was world class he wouldn't have got beat of Nicky Cook and Gomez. He never won 1 world title fight. Take AAA and RB great examples. AAA had more natural talent, but jamp trainer every 2 minutes and believed hype, and never achieved what he should have in the game. Then take Ricky, he never had same ability, but trained like a beast, listened to what he was taught and made sure he was fitter than his opponents and he won two world titles in the ring. He had a much better career than AAA.

 

I only thing stopping Ricky fighting Broner was the prep time the money was excellent but we simply never had enough time to prepare

 

then you can't appreciate the judgement of distance in both stances, great footwork and balance Crawford had top top fighter
