Id have to go back and look for the drinking stuff, I never really researched this in depth because its a cheap shot to go after a guy well after hes retired. My interest in him is tied to his boxing career and theres tons of negative stuff on it if you are willing and know where to look. He was involved in several scandals well into the 1930s. This is probably why he was so private later in life and didnt even stay too closely associated with boxing.

 

While reading Steve's biography of Harry Greb, I was struck by the fact that Gene Tunney was so ruthless when it came to achieving his goals as a professional boxer. This portrait was definitely at odds with everything that I had read about him.

I believe someone could write a biography of Tunney which is honest while treating him with some sensitivity. Yes, I have read and heard about Tunney having drinking problems after he retired, but so did many other people from all walks of life. It also is my understanding that Tunney had a daughter who suffered from schizophrenia and killed someone. I have read quite a bit about schizophrenia, a devastating and complex mental illness which is far too common and is extremely misunderstood by the general public.

Tunney was of course fighting his 3rd bout in 20 days and just 7 days previously had gone 12 rounds. So that may have affected his ability to win against such a decent opponent as Loughran, who had given Greb a bloody hard fight until he tired badly later in fight a month previous.
