Speaking of boxing in Cincinnati... this was in the paper today:

Rep. Mallory: Put ‘Vegas-style’ boxing arena are new casino

    December 10th, 2009, 8:57 am

Rep. Dale Mallory, a West End Democrat and brother of mayor Mark, wants to see a “Las Vegas” style boxing arena at Cincinnati’s new casino. (He says he’ll talk to Penn National about it, but Penn National won’t own Cincinnati’s casino – Quicken Loans/Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert will.)

    Here’s Mallory’s release:
Rep. Mallory Proposes Vegas-Style Boxing Venue for Cincinnati Casino
Cincinnati has Rich History with “The Sweet Science”

COLUMBUS– State Representative Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati) today proposed what he calls a “Las Vegas style” boxing arena at the recently approved Cincinnati casino. Rep. Mallory says he will discuss the idea with casino owner Penn National Gaming.

“I believe a Las Vegas style boxing arena would be an economic boon to Cincinnati, and the casino would be the perfect venue,” said Rep. Mallory. “Boxing already enjoys great support in this area, and it would provide additional sports and tourism money for the local economy. It could also give even more back to the community by helping to support local youth boxing programs.”

Cincinnati has a rich history of support for boxing, dating back to the late 1800’s when the first gloved boxing match was held in Cincinnati with champion boxing pioneer John L. Sullivan. It has produced many boxing legends including Freddie Miller, Ezzard Charles, Lloyd Gibson, Bud Smith, and Aaron Pryor. It is also home of the Icon Buddy LaRosa (son of boxer Tony LaRosa) who has supported Cincinnati boxing as a manager, promoter and philanthropist. Cincinnati also has a strong Golden Gloves program and USA Amateur program.

Ohio voters in November approved a constitutional amendment to authorize several casinos in Ohio, including one planned for the Broadway Commons area in Cincinnati. Penn National executives have said they hope to break ground in late 2010.

Hey slacker i have a question for you. There was this kid name Keith Kemp from Cincinatti,Oh that i saw back in the 90s. A team of kids from Cincinatti came down here to Southern California and a few of them did well. This kid Kemp was very impressive he was only about 15 back then and won the Jr welter Blue & Gold invitationals in South El Monte,Ca. I always wondered what happened to him I know that he won some more Prestigous National Amatuer titles but never heard about him in the Pros. Do you know of him?

I've heard of him, but only vaguely.

Looks like he was National AAU (United States) Amateur Light Welterweight Championship in 1997, and his more (in)famous teammate Ricardo Williams Jr. was that champ in 98 and 99.

He fought in the nationals in NY in 99: http://www.enquirer.com/editions/1999/05/18/spt_local_boxers_excel.html

He and his brother were trained by their dad, who is apparently quite a character and you can read about him here: http://www.womenkickboxing.com/womens.boxing.htm
