When I am in the dentist chair, this fight keeps my mind off whats going on. Both bleeders, both have good chins, look about same height and build. So how would it go ? I see Carmen ( as ever ) marching forward, forcing the action, going for Jose,s body hoping to slow Napoles down, for his part Jose will be jabbing and hooking, like only he can, if I am pressed, feel that Napoles, with his slightly tighter defense will prevail by SD, probably both will sustain cuts along the way, cant see any knock downs, the fight could decide where the stand in any top ten of Welters.
Well, Basilio would lose far more blood, and suffer far more pain that you would in a dentists chair, that's for sure Mike. I think welter-prime Mantequilla would really put on a show here. Smoothly (as "Mantequilla" suggests) outboxing Carmen, and slicing open his face with laser-like precision. Napoles would seamlessly shift between pretty, effective boxing, and increasingly brutal punishment, "whilst" sufferling very little in return for 6 rounds, until the referee has seen enough...rescuing a blind, battered Basilio from further working over. If it sounds like I'm making it seem that Carmen Basilio was an unqualified opponent, I'm really not....it's just that Jose Napoles was just that good.
Very interesting, never have ever given it any thought. Two of the best welterweight fights of all time in a savagely-contested 15-round contest. Napoles by MD.
