Not from the footage I've seen, more of a one two, hold and move fighter, similar to Vitali

As far as Ali not being in ownership of a good left hook, ask Bonavena ( who Ali dropped with one punch ), Frazier ( who Ali hit with four in a row in round nine of FOC ) or Liston ( who Ali clipped with numerous hooks in the third round of their first fight ).

Larry Holmes probably used the left hook less than anyone I can think of off the top of my head. It was one of the reasons Larry was a bit susceptible to being hit with right hands. The threat of a good left hook from an opponent tends to make a fighter a bit more selective with his use of the right hand.

That punch by Toney v Nunn was actually an overhand left thrown from a southpaw stance after Toney had missed with his right hand. I reckon JT must be left handed as there ain’t many orthodox fighters who can pull that move, especially against a 6 ft 2 southpaw middleweight.

    Cheers All.

Lennox stopped using his after the Davenport era and especially when he was with Correa. Early in his career he had a nice left hook and threw it often.

You are right about the left Toney hit Nunn with; it is also true of the shots that stopped Delgado and Robinson.

Ali was known for not having a left hood or one that he used with any sort of frequency which is part of what made his stoppage of Bonavena such a shock ..

I haven't reviewed the films to prepare for this answer, but past heavyweights Schmeling, Max Baer, Jimmy Braddock, Jack Sharkey, and Gene Tunney all seemed to rely on right hands for their power punches. I guess the older style boxing types were taught that the left hook left them open for counters. I think Dempsey raised awareness of the value of a great left hook and Joe Louis demonstrated that you didn't have to be a mauler in order to be able to use the left hook effectively. Louis was able to integrate the hook into the more traditional style of stand-up boxing.

Of course, early fighters like Fitzsimmons and Ketchel had good left hooks, but I think they were the exceptions rather than the rule. I have a theory that Kearns picked up how to use a leveraged left hook from watching or hearing about Ketchel's shift and then passed it on to Dempsey.

Jackson had a huge hook and used it often. Try 1.10 for starters, then 1.21 etc. There's heaps of left hook ko's in there.
