Morrison-Bentt that was just insane, show anybody can beat anybody well sometimes Tommy got KTFO and willaims vs Quintanna wasnt a tune up fight at all, what are u talking about
Mercer-Ferguson was one that comes to mind. Mercer was on his way to a showdown with Riddick Bowe and if I recall correctly this fight was on the undercard of Bowe-Dokes as a way to help hype their fight. This was also the fight Mercer offered Ferguson a bribe.
Was duran vs hearns really considered a tune up fight? i can't believe anyone would take hearns lightly.
I couldn't agree more. This is the reason I rarely post on this site. I don't feel like qouting all of these but here's a short list of moronic boxing fans suggestions as to what a tune-up fight is. If you see yours, you're not that smart, or you don't know the sport that well. Duran /Hearns- A) it was for the 154 lb world title, B) Hearns didn't have a chance to win this? I kind of want this guy to explain this one to me. Khan/ Prescott- I have a hard time calling any fight a tune-up when neither fighter had been tested yet, it was for the WBO intercontinental belt, both were undefeated, and both fighters had yet to record their 20th bout. Baldomir /Judah- I had a little but of a tough time with this one, but in the end I believe it was Judah's mandatory and while there was a huge talent mismatch on paper, it was for a legit world title. JMM /Chris John- again, world title fight, and who exactly was tuning up whom? Witter/ Bradley or Alexander- Witter is a solid talent but he lost to both, so calling this a tune up would imply that Witter was tuning himself up against Bradley and Alexander yet lost to both of them. On what planet were people strongly picking Witter to beat either of them. Both fighters are clearly better than Witter and are argueably #1 an #2 in the division. McClellan/ Benn- again...world title fight, and frankly you should be shot for even mentioning this as a tune-up. I can actually blanket the next two under two simple rules of thumb....if any fighter ranked #5 and higher in his weight class fights another fighter in that weight class ranked #5 and higher...IT'S NOT A TUNE-UP. Also, if a major world title is at stake, it can almost never be considered a tune-up. Which includes these brilliant posts: Cotto/Clottey or Margarito/Mosley Example: If Mayweather decided to fight Lovemore N'Dou (who is a name opponent, but not ranked in the top ten or even fifteen by anybody, and is past what would be considered his "prime"), and lost....that my good friends...would be called losing a ****ing tune-up.
Lovemore Ndou V Jose Luis Castillo - Castillo got the nod even though he lost the fight because he was signed to fight Hatton next. Lovemore Ndou V Paulie Malignaggi - Malignaggi got the nod even though he lost the fight because he was signed to fight Hatton next. Hang on a minute.
Also on the Witter V Bradley/Alexander tune ups. It would only be classed as a tune up in Britain for the Bradley fight as all the press here had Witter winning easy and Pulling for a fight with Hatton. Anyone who knew anything about boxing was probably expecting what happened. The Alexander fight wasnt a tune up as it was for a vacant title and therefore no opponent was in sight. I wouldnt say that Witter was a strong favorite either after getting exposed by bradley
Maskaev's last fight. Can't remember the guy's name- he went on to lose to Sam Peter Nagy Aguilera that's it
