I think this is as good and example as any. Kirkland Laing v Buck Smith (or is it jones?i always get this mixed up). Ol' kirkland was practically all lined up for a title shot til he took on this journeyman

    This.

If a guy is champ and he's fighting someone in the top 10, it's not a tune-up.

A tune-up is a legit guy, who steps DOWN in class from what he has been fighting, as a stay busy fight.. or a quality guy coming off a loss who fights a no-hoper or journeymen as a comeback style fight.

Shannon Briggs v Sedrick Fields was a tune-up. He was coming off the loss to Lewis and the draw to Botha.. and Fields was solid journeymen status.. a fight he had no business losing.. but did.

I'm also going to never call any obviously "shot" fighter at the end of his career fighting ANYONE a tune-up.. as it's clear at that point that the only thing you could call a tune-up to say Roy Jones is someone with say a 2-15 record.

    Cotto-Margarito, Hearns-Duran, Benn-McClellan, Ali-Foreman were tune-ups?

    WTF? :huh

I suppose Mayweather-Pacquiao will be considered a tune-up fight too.

I wish I hadnt started this thread. Or maybe I should rename it "some notable boxing upsets".

    Boxing terms.
"Tune-up" - a fight in which a higher level boxer takes a step down in class to fight against a lower level opponent he is expected to beat in preparation for a title fight.

Morrison vs Michael Bennt, Tommy was going to fight Lennox next, and Mercer-Ferguson the first fight Ray was going to fight Bowe. Alex Garcia-Mike Dixon. Im pretty sure Garcia was super close or either had a title fight signed but he lost and so went his title shot out the window.
