There was an old story I once read of some street tough that pushed an older ex-fighter on the street and an argument ensued when street-tough said something to the effect of 'let's get it on'. Ex-fighter was in his 40s or 50s at this time and said to street-tough, "just let me warm up first". The story was that the ex-fighter started shadow boxing and walnut-sized knuckles started to protrude (maybe this is where they got the idea for Wolverine) on his hands. It was at this time that street-tough took off as fast as he could down the street, leaving a satisfied Jake LaMotta behind him.

Every convenience store needs a former boxing champ posted inside just in case.

When the riot started after Bowe-Golota, George Foreman became a 6'4" protective wall between thugs and Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant; at one point, you hear George telling someone, "No son, you don't want to do that -"

Facing 260lbs of professional heavyweight with fists the size of canned hams - no, indeed, I wouldn't want to do that, or anything else that could be seen as a threat ... Lampley was extremely grateful for George's presence.

A jab from Big George would be enough for most people to reconsider their life choices.

He said that he cut his knuckle on the man's teeth. He said that if he could no longer get his hand out of the mouth of a guy he had just punched before the man was able to bite him, then he was too old to be fighting in the street.

Ernie Shavers spent some years working the doors in Liverpool. He must surely have had to defend himself at some stage.

Boxing overall really is best for unarmed self defense.

    Hi Buddy.
I am sure Janitor will get back to you in due course nice chap that he is, in the meantime I will give you my thoughts on all the books and literature I have read on Greb, the first book ( I believe ) was by James A Fair titled " Give him to the Angels " it reads somewhat like a comic, lots of fanciful stories about Greb and his " antics " amongst them is the so called fight on the kerb, it went something like Walker bumped into Harry out in the the street and said " You Dutch rat, you would never beat me if you didn't thump me in the eyes " to which Greb replied " I can beat you any day of the week , you Irish mick, and I will do it again here and now " then not long after they started at it, a big local cop came on the scene and broke it up, good type that is is, the whole episode has been debunked over the decades, and hardly anyone takes it as the truth these days, learned posters like mcvey and mcgrain might have their own views on the " story " let's wait and see.
Hope the above was of some help to you ?
    stay safe buddy, chat soon.
    Mike.

It's helpful, but out of curiosity, who has it been debunked?

It's one of the better ones certainly. In a pure one on one against an untrained attacker, jiu-jitsu is very good, however in any situation with potentially multiple attackers and/or you need to attack and immediately get out, boxing is probably the best.

Usually striking is best, most guys are either gonna try to run forward to grab you or just plain swing at you, people don’t know what it is like to be hit by someone who knows how to punch properly. In a 1v1 “honourable” confrontation wrestling, judo, ji jitsu will carry the day, boxing is fine more then enough but on the off chance a big Galento type guy manages to get a hold of you it’s tricky to envision Manny Pac doing much from that position.
