All this talk of Joe Calzaghe is the greatest British fighter ever, fair enough. I am a Joe Calzaghe fan, but nothing compares to the Heavyweight Champion. The Heavyweight Champion used to be one of the most reconiscible figures in sport and in the general public. Everyone used to know who the Heavyweight Champion was, young children, Old people, women, you name it. I was a young kid, and i knew who Mike Tyson was and what he represented, this was as a 4 year old kid.

"I didn't know what a middle weight champion was, but i knew what the Heavyweight Champion stood for....Iron Mike Tyson"

And Lennox Lewis was the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion, possibly the last great Heavyweight Champion. Possibly the last Heavyweight Champion that the whole world recognised, as a Iconic figure.

    Lennox Lewis..

People have to look at the magnitude of achievements. Lennox Lewis's whole career has a far bigger magnitude than Joe Calzaghe's, just like Benn vs Eubank will forever dwarf any other British domestic fight.

It's about being in the right place at the right time..greatness. Greatness is greatly miss understood. There are good athlete's than there are great athlete's, because of the time they where in history. No one will ever come close to Carl Lewis in track and field, who changed the game. No one will ever come close to Mike Tyson, these are monumental figures, people who transcended the game. Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis etc..........

I don't think you can even compare Joe Calzaghe to Lennox Lewis...Comparing Era's.....

Lennox Lewis fought in World War 2, Where as Joe Calzaghe fought in a Minor Civil War.

Lennox Lewis is (and will be for a long time) the last great heavyweight champion.

Not to mention the 2nd greatest heavyweight of all time.

I have said it a fair few times, and never been laughed at.

    A few corrections, say 3rd, 5th, 6th etc.

To be laughed at in the general forum could be considered a compliment anyways, judging by the standard of poster in there.

I would have thought Ali and Louis are a fair distance ahead of the rest as far as pure heavyweights go (you could rank Langford, Greb and Charles up there too even though they are not pure HW's, but they had a fair few fights up there).

How does your top three look Beeston; is it (1) Ali, (2) Lewis, (3) Louis.

Are you thinking of things in a H-2-H sense?

Sorry man you are crazy .. Lennox barely makes my top 10 although ive never really done a top 10 list. Lennox's cv is light, Tua, Golota, Grant, Briggs and Mavrovic were average heavyweights in historical terms ..
Tyson and Holyfield were well past they're primes when Lewis faced them. He got sparked out by 1 punch against 2 very average heavyweights in McCall and Rahman, i dont recall any other heavyweight 'great' being starched with 1 shot twice in they're prime ..
    Lewis squeaked past Mercer
He was strictly a 12 round fighter wereas fighters from the past had to go 15 at least which takes a whole different strategy and mindset .. Jack Johnson had to go even longer. It is an impossibility that Lennox Lewis could go 12 rounds at any kind of pace let alone 15, he was blowing hard after 6 in most fights ...
He just was nowere near the number 2 slot, not a chance.
I'll give you my top 10 off the top of my head so you have the chance to pick me apart .. Just for the record Joe Louis is my favourite heavyweight fighter of all time ....

    1. Ali
    2. Louis
    3. Marciano
    4. Holmes
    5. Johnson
    6. Dempsey
    7. Frazier
    8. Tyson
    9. LEWIS
    10. Liston

Hows my list ?? Thats off the top of my head .. People might say that Holmes is too high but the guy was class and unlike Lewis his Jab was the greatest Jab in heavyweight history, Lewis's was a pawing range finder .. Holmes didnt have a great list of opponents but he was a 15 rd fighter and he had the heart of a lion, when he was dropped by one of the biggest shots ive ever seen against Earnie Shavers he got up and started trading, if Lewis had taken that shot he would have been asleep for a week ..
Never underestimate the earlier guys like Louis, Dempsey and Johnson. People like to diminish they're acheivements because they were around a long time ago but boxing doesnt evolve like other sports, if they were around today they would still be superstars .... Lewis at 9 is about right for me ..

    Bob Fitzsimmons.

Great middleweight and later heavyweight champion.

Joe Calzaghe and David Haye rolled into one.

IMHO Marciano is too high, but a lot of people do have him that high but Holmes and Johnson had much more impressive reigns. Dempsey is also a very tricky fighter to place, he didn't defend the title enough IMHO.

I think you've got Marciano and Dempsey a little high there. Dempsey didn't fight his biggest challenges. Overall his resume is quite poor, and certainly does not eclipse his popularity.

Marciano...I think his resume is a little underrated when people criticise it harshly. Some of the supposed "older" names he fought, the degree to which they were faded is sometimes overstated. That said, there is no doubt it was a fairly weak era, and H2H he would surely find it difficult to match up to many. 3 just sounds a little over the top to me.

No doubt alot of guys deserve to be higher up an ATG list than JC. No matter what the reason is he spent most of his career fighting duds in a division no one cares about for a crap Euro level belt.

Give him his due's he beat a top fighter in Kessler but who had he beaten to become a legendary fighter. BHop was still obviously pretty hot and Lacy ok.

Calzaghes career is covered in ****, glitter and vinegar.

I respect your opinion, but there is nobody in history who absorbed the kind of punishment that Marciano took. Whether its his Walcott fight or his Moore fight, i think Rocky proved so much in them fights, more than Lennox ever proved ..
