What would qualify as a "novelty" fight? I'd say a 50+ Larry Holmes fighting Butterbean qualifies. There must be others. Dig deep, historians.
Any Foreman fight in 87/88 seemed a novelty, but he proved us skeptics big time wrong. Hatton/Mayweather was a novelty fight in Britain; a Boxing match that was on the front and back pages of the papers.
tyson vs cory sanders exhibition as well as the numerous exhibitions that jack johnson, dempsey, zale and graziano did through the years. although it was suppose to be historical and for a title, i think leonard-duran 3 was pretty much a novelty fight. leonard was past his best and duran a bit more at 39. i think this upcomming fight with trinidad and jones is a novelty as well, not really any signifigance or any lasting mark to make on either the sport of their definement. marciano had a exhibition sparring match with ali that was hyped.
Jones Trinidad not a novelty, if RJJ wins, he will probably get to fight the winner of Bhop and Calzaghe. same for Tito, except hes not gonna win.
I beleive it was Carnera vs a Bear, and by the looks of the footage, the bear was getting in some blows. Some assuie fighter fought a kangaroo.
Galento practically fought a zoo of animals. I read somewhere that he wrestled an octopus and didn't know they could spray ink. He climbed into the tank and grabbed it, and it sprayed him and scared the hell out of him.
how do you figure jones trinidad is? if jones wins, and ko's tito like he says, he will probably end up fighting calzaghe, which would be cool. but a match between two great fighters, even if slightly past their primes, is better then half the **** on showtime!:bbb
Shame all of Leonard's fights were not novelties then, because by seeing his sweetness getting knocked on his backside by a Camacho jab was one of my happiest memories in boxing. I used to have little time for the Macho man either, but redemption came with that one act... (And showing he did have balls against Chavez)
