An ok point but i've never really expected Mayweather to lose either.... Short of a pretty boy match I wouldn't expect him to lose to anybody. Your right in the fact that if he beat AM his acclaim is beyond doubt.

Beating Margarito is hardly going to boost him dramatically. Mosley and Quintana are superior fighters by a long way.

Yes but Margirito has got this bull**** Mr Avoided tag.... I think it would be a good scalp.

He only got that tag amongst the naive, its amazing what a few press releases can do

Margarito's crude ass was avoided because he hasn't beaten anybody to deserve serious consideration. Cintron was more hype than substance, he himself has beaten nobody. His best win is an unimpressive one over Joshua Clottey, amongst those many losses, and people wonder why Mayweather supposedly "avoided" him

It strikes me as bizarre people spoke like this is make or break for Cotto. For Cotto, this is just another B level being fed to the shark.

I'm with you on the capability of Margarito being less then Mosley, Judah etc... I actually like Margaritos win over Martinez best... I saw that one and he was very impressive. Cintron had a pretty good win over Teddy Reid (admittedly on the slide) I'll be reasonably impressed if Cotto does a number on him... Least we know he'll come to fight.

    Whats your p4p top 5?

I have Calzaghe higher than Pacman simply because I believe him to be the better fighter. As for Calzaghe's competition Kessler was his main challenger @168 and BHop was regarded as the top man @ 175. If you feel they don't match up to Morales + Barrera there's not a lot Calzaghe can do about that - they were the best available opposition.

The more I think about this, the more I think I should keep 1 vacant. Nobody deserves it right now, as tempting as it is to move Joe up. A win against Pavlik would do it, but he'll be retiring himself by then, so I don't think my dream will ever be realised :|

    - Vacant
    2. Calzaghe
    3. Pacquiao
    4. Marquez
    5. Cotto

PACMAN SUCKS..... the only people that like him are less then 5ft tall but make smashing food. Technically he's rank.... he's fast but his defence is poo and wee. Calzaghe and Pac are very comparible but Calzaghes career has been more impressive. Beating a shot Barrera, a shot Morales and robbing JMM of victory with a poor draw is not the stuff greats are made of... He's good but no ATG.

How in god's name can you have 'vacant' ?! It's not a belt that is fought for. It's a theoretical rating of all active boxers! By default whoever you rate the best is no. 1.

Calzaghe is the best p4p fighter in your estimation. End of story!

Me & TFFP are in agreement here about leaving the spot vacant. It makes sense.

Jeff, fair enough if you don't want to give Pac credit for those wins but what fights are you giving Joe credit for that set the two apart?

    1. Cotto
    2. Juan Diaz
    3. JC- very begrugingly
    4. Israel Vasquez
    5. Raf Marquez

But I don't think anyone other then Cotto and Diaz would been in the top ten 10 years ago.

Kessler and Lacy..... Lacy WAS a treamendous fighter who has been ruined by the loss. Pre Calzaghe he was looking p4p top 3 in terms of capability.

Kessler was a the top guy in his division and Zag did a number on him. Many of his other victories were of the impressive variety.

What the hell does it matter if there is a belt? It's just a gimmick. Its the position as figurehead of the sport, the p4p champion that is important, as would be recognised by Ring Magazine. Some great fighters have held this position, and I don't give it away lightly

There is nobody suitable to carry that torch at present, and thus I'll leave that spot vacant, open or whatever else you want to call it

But many Pac wins "were of the impressive variety" were they not? As for Lacy can't be arsed to do that debate again. Lets just say I think the number one spot hinges on the next performance of a couple of fighters. Until then the jury is out.:good

The p4p #1 spot should be no different to a belt. They aren't just going to give Mayweather's WBC belt away, Berto and Rodriguez will fight for the vacant title. Whether they are deserving is questionable, but thats neither here nor there. Pacquiao and Calzaghe will now battle it out for the #1 spot
