Hatton urges Calzaghe to retire Ricky Hatton has joined the calls for Joe Calzaghe to retire after the Welshman's comprehensive victory over Roy Jones Jr at Madison Square Garden. Calzaghe extended his unbeaten record to 46 fights by beating the American. "There's nothing more Joe can do," Hatton told Radio 5 Live. "There's always a new contender coming through. "But he's beaten Bernard Hopkins, he's beaten Roy Jones, he's done Madison Square Garden and Las Vegas. You can't get a better way to bow out." Calzaghe, 36, hinted he was ready to quit following his points win in the early hours of Sunday morning but said he would discuss his future with his family before making a final decision. Former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis has already urged him to call it a day. He told 5 Live's Sportsweek: "He's beaten everybody there is to beat and doesn't have anything else to prove, so I think he should retire." "I think Lennox Lewis showed you can walk away from the game and stay away from it and get out on top. "It depends on how much money he's got. If he's got enough money to comfortably have the lifestyle he wants then he would retire and if he hasn't then he'll only be fighting for the money, which a lot of boxers do later on in their career. "Fingers crossed he's tucked a bit away and he can have a nice lifestyle with his family." However, Calzaghe's former manager Frank Warren believed the Newbridge fighter would postpone plans to hang up his gloves. "Before the fight he was saying it was his last fight and now he's saying he's not sure," said Warren, whose 12-year association with Calzaghe ended after the southpaw's victory over Hopkins in April. "I believe he'll fight on. I would like to see him retire. He's got nothing else to prove and he's without doubt the greatest super-middleweight of all time. "For me, he's the best British boxer since the war. His record speaks for itself. "They say that fighters are the last people to know when it's time to give up, but I think they're the last ones to admit it, and that's what he needs to do." Hopkins, who Calzaghe defeated in Las Vegas, and Mikkel Kessler, whom he beat in 2007, are among a small list of potential opponents for Calzaghe if he chooses to continue. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7718397.stm Anyone want to suggest to Hatton that he should retire. Afterall he beat Kostya but got schooled by PBF and there is no one else at his weight that stands out. Also unlike Hatton, JC will never be a stand up comedian so he might as well have another fight and make himself more money to retire on.
i reckon we 'll see him in another fight maybe 2 - if his made a million from that fight he can demand more in his next
1 millon? He made a lot more than that from what I read. Closer to 5m for the fight and he co-promoted it as well.
I can't understand why people are calling him to retire because he his a young 36 and doesn't look shot at all. Maybe have a fight with dawson and if he wins then retire.
5 mill us dollars =2.2 million gbp after paying his team taxes etc - i reckon he ll have just over a million banked
Ricky Hatton should retire if he is going to waste his time fighting **** light welters and smaller dudes.
Well Mallianggi is recognised number 2 in the divison wait smaller guys. What because their is talk of hatton V pac.atsch
I think Calzaghe will be making a lot more than what you are thinking. The money will be paid into a company, rather than him as an individual - because then he will only have to pay corporation tax rather than PAYE and NI contributions. He would then pay himself a suitable wage, and a dividend each year.
